Downsizing

Thinking about downsizing the fleet. With 2 trucks that are sub-optimal and since Tami just got a job outside of the home I need at least one vehicle that I'm not worried about leaving me or especially her, stranded.
My '04 needs a total engine rebuild, it has a rod knocking. With Tami out of work that project was on hold. I have an engine stripped, just need machine work and reassembly.
Now the 2000 has decided to have a bad head gasket after doing the head gaskets last October. No I didn't use studs.
I think I've about had it.
I should just burn them for the insurance.

Walter,

Get rid of anything with a green oval on it. It's been over a month since the green truck left and I still can't stop smiling.

What vehicles are you contemplating?

I'm thinking about scrapping the 2000. I can't see throwing money into it since I just did the heads and it didn't take. The 04 is just waiting for the engine I have to get re-done.
I'm thinking a cheap commuter for Tami and keeping the 04 for camping and fishing duty. I will probably switch the differentials since the 2000 has 4:13's and a Detroit TruTrac combo. Other than that the 04 has everything I need. I have no plans of thrashing it like the 2000 has.

Walter, you are not alone in those thoughts. They suck but we have gone through similar issues.

Our 96 needs an engine, the 92 has had some starting issues this winter, and now my 95 needs a new battery and steering work just to be safe driving locally (It has no heat or AC and I won't take it far from home with baby).

Get Tami a Honda... and keep one Rover.

You come to a point in life where you just have to say fuck it and get a reliable car. ..nothing wrong with that.

So true, I am rover-less now, but that doesn't mean I will not buy another one later.

Someone once told me the most useful tool for a Land Rover owner was a daily driver. Mine is a Volvo, cannot seem to kill them. I just bought a 99 DII and not sure what I will do with it. The 01 gets driven once a week at best.

I may have miss-spoken. I pulled all the plugs this evening expecting to find cylinder 4 to have antifreeze in it and found that it was dry and the plug not overly fouled. I did find evidence of misfiring but nothing really that bad.
I have been getting cold start misfires in cylinder 4 and have also been experiencing coolant lose since changing the expansion tank and thermostat.
I did find several small leaks from loose hose clamps as well as the throttle body warmer seeping.
I elevated the front end and refilled the coolant then ran the piss out of it. I believe I finally burped it. I've never had trouble in the past getting this truck to suck down the coolant but this time it was like a colicky baby. Now when I open the expansion tank with the truck running it doesn't try to puke in my face like a 3 day binge. I don't have the rushing water sound in the heater core either. I'm going to let it sit overnight elevated then tomorrow I will try to track down my misfire.
While I doubt it's a wire issue I'll try that first. It only misfires when it is cold, once it's warmed up it smooths out.
Wish me luck.
