I saw the pictures of this but the video is even more pathetic. Might as well drive a Ford Escape or Rav4

We ran one through parts of our course (very easy parts of course) in CT. It was a misbuild (LR forgot to install the moonroof - haha) and they wanted to just see what it would do.

They ran lots of them at the Expo last weekend too.

Women love them. My sister in law traded her RR Sport for one.

They are selling cars and not going out of business. This is good.

How did it do in CT?

Well we drove it on the path of least resistance. Keeping it off rocks was the hard part as it has the ground clearance of an Outback. Getting it to "climb" isn't easy either, since it doesn't have low range. But given enough time (spotting) you can do a lot with just about anything.

It's a nice little car, but should stick to paved surfaces.

I fast forwarded through the video. Cut it down from 6 minutes to 20 seconds. All it tells me is that the traction control works.

Women around here don't love them...

I even showed one to my wife and she said " that's a range rover? It looks stupid and too smooshed"

From what I gather the new big body rr will be a similar result....

Well regardless they are selling a shit load of the damn things. The dealers here in NoVA that I work with (three of them) can't keep them in stock.

We did an event for Garden & Gun recently and had a few at a course nearby. Lots of flats that day.

As pointless a video as I have ever seen. Why oh why does LR want to extoll the supposed "off road" abilities of what would probably be a very fun commuter/highway vehicle if I had 50 grand to frivolously spend. What dimwit would ever do or try to do what they did in this vehicle in the video? I'm glad it will be good good for the LR bottomline and will help keep them in business but quit with the utterly pointless silly videos.

The Top Gear segment of James May bashing up an Evoque in Death Valley is good. It's even funnier at the end when he rolls into Vegas to chauffeur, um, Cher to an event.

If you can get over the limitations of clearance and tires it will probably do better off road than most people expect. Which leads me to ask...

When is somebody going to develop an Evoque lift kit? Something like the P38 coil kit that adds 2 inches of lift with increased weight rating and the computer overrides. Add some low profile 20" mud terrains and you're in business!

Wait a minute, shouldn't we be having this conversation over on the Evoque forum that banned the brigade of D-web smartasses who showed up asking these sorts of questions?

I wonder if LR will ever make a North America available, solid axle off-road vehicle again?

From the pictures I saw earlier this week it has similar lines to a sport just bigger... I didn't think it looked bad.

Agent, good question. Last weekend I went off roading with some other Rover owners. Of the 8 trucks in the group, we had

my D1, largely stock
a couple of D2s, lifted with larger tires
one P38, lifted with larger tires
4, yup 4, LR3s. One was bone stock, the others had either AT or MT tires.

It was interesting to see the different trucks drive the same terrain. For example, there were a couple of loose, steepish hill climbs that the solid axle trucks got up, albeit with some bouncing around and spitting rocks, requiring some momentum to make it up the final slope.

Then the LR3s went up, and they looked to have an easier time of things. Less bouncing, minimal wheel spin, less throttle, they just sort of floated up the hill. Even the LR3 with street tires driven with a twitchy throttle made it up this hill without trouble. Parked on level terrain with air suspension at max height the LR3s looked to have as much, if not more clearance than the D2 on 285/75/16 tires.

On an earlier trip a RR L322 with no mods other than MT tires performed a similar feat, cruising up a loose, rocky, steep climb that a couple of locked TJs struggled with. The more I see the newer trucks in action the more I like them. But that doesn't mean I'm replacing my D1 any time soon.

Just buy a new Jeep Wrangler and put green ovals over all the Jeep badges and paint over any Jeep lettering and use a Sharpie to hand write in Defender. That's as close as you will ever get to a new solid axle North American LR off road truck again ever.

Don't forget Buick Portholes on the fenders.
