How bad is the 5.0?

It sounds like an LR4 is like traveling with Princess Vespa.

I assume the 5.0 L322 are the same?

I'm guessing this isn't like the P38s vs Discos where they gave the big boy slightly different and slightly better stuff?
I am sure they gave the big boys slightly better stuff; but, since in 2010 LR wasn't even aware of the issue, I don't think early ones had anything different.

FWIW, the frequency of 2.7/3.0 diesel crankshaft failures overseas for D3/D4/RRS is about the same.

Oh damn, clicking on those doesn't at least take you to the ad?

You shouldn't need an account to look at marketplace ads...
I looked at one of them. I see it's a long list of vehicles that need engines I assume. Keep in mind that for some reason a lot of Land Rover guys out there are scared of this thing. So I'm guessing a good portion of those could be repaired. and less than half are really junk.
Those engines had one of two failures most likely. One is the timing chain failure. I would take that and fix it without much problem. The head will come off it and all the chain guides and tensioners would get replaced. Probably the chains. The other is an overheat. I would avoid those. It's probably worth trying to fix it. But that's a crap shoot. First, I would want to get it going and fix whatever cooling system problem caused it. Then run it long enough to see how hurt it is. In my experience they pull the threads out of the block and get a clamping failure of the head gasket. Thats fixable but it's going to involve doing thread repairs to the block with a threaded insert. But if you have the larger head bolts already that's not an option. Then say you have all that work out and you fix several holes on one bank. I've had a vehicle come back after 12 months with head bolts pulled out of the other bank.
Overheats are just going to be a lot of extra trouble.

Timing chain tensioners running out of travel is a well known Ford feature. It causes start up rattle of death. Ford Ecoboost 3.5 has it, reportedly solved from 2021 MY onwards.

13’+ is supposed to have improved tensioners but understand they can still have issues if improperly maintained
Timing chains suffer from the long service intervals. It's the most effected part of the engine they say. 16,000 mile oil change interval is just a selling point. It's not based on fact.
