Idler Tension Pulley Wheel

I could not tell a difference in the Dayco and the OEM. Same weight, same feel, etc...

I don't know about the bearing. Never looked. But I put it on my truck in 2005 and it's still on there.....not sure how many miles, though.

Well, all your help has been invaluable. Somehow, using that method I linked to that showed someone drilling down the side of the wheel near the snap ring to get it out, I was able to get that snap ring out. I put in a new bearing and replaced the wheel. Of course, once I got the wheel off and decided to spin some of the components by hand, I kinda knew that the idler was the least of my problems. I noticed a noise coming from the water pump when I spun the pulley attached to the fan. And I kind of figured that it was the kind of sound that when at high velocity, might sound just like a high pitched whine or squeal. OH WELL!!

And, just because I am a masochist, I decided to still have a go at that snap ring. Love the challenge and maybe I would be lucky and the new bearing would solve the problem. Well, the new bearing is in and I let her idle for 10 minutes and guess what, wouldn't you know, that stupid squeal is still there. So, what's involved in replacing the water pump? I really don't have the time and this is a total bummer.

Of course, maybe the original idler wheel with the new bearing is still no good and I should try that DAYCO wheel!

And Land Rover made the Freelander I assume you have a point?

The Dayco at the Auto store is a stamped tin piece with a Chinese bearing Mine lasted about 6 months my OEM one lasted 140,000 miles. Similar though.[/QUOTE

The engine in the Freelander was made by BG/Rover, not Land Rover.

The worthless transmission was made by JATCO, a Japanese company.

The stamped wheel is not for this application but can be used.

Didn't somebody say that maybe, just maybe we should investigate further to ensure we were on the right track???

Glad you got it sorted. BTW-my LWB has had a squealing water pump for five years. It's probably gonna blow up on me when I need it most.

I was thinking of your original comments when I spun the water pump pulley. Anyway, it has been whining for a few months. I see you claim yours has been doing it for five years. So, can I leave it for a while? I know, if it blows then I'm overheating, being towed wherever, and in deep ****. But, I really don't have the time to do this now, or have it done for me. It is a daily driver.

NO! Just because I'm doing something dos not mean anyone else should do it. If I blow up an engine, I have seven or eight spares and a place to do the swap.

I do a lot of things with my trucks that I shouldn't do, much less anyone else.

OK. OK. Didn't mean to upset you. Guess I have to get this taken care of sooner rather than later. Can I still drive it for a few days? What's involved if I want to tackle this myself? I hear getting the fan off can be a PITA.

Thanks.

Did this job a couple weeks ago,

bought the dayco pulley AND the 6203rsj bearing to see if i could just use that

wound up getting the clip off fine with a small screwdriver, PBblaster and hammer
used differently sized sockets to get the old bearing out and new one in
(i had a socket that perfectly matched the OD of the bearing)

Entire job took 15-20 minutes, no more squeak..

The dayco i returned was made in canada and had a chinese bearing in it,
the SKF 6203rsj i relplaced it with was from napa, made in Argentina

if you need to replace the entire assembly (including tensioner) the dayco
part is here for $130;
http://www.amazon.com/Dayco-89289-A...s_1?ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive&carId=003

I'm not 100% positive about the above P/N, so double check it.

Good luck

DOOD! I'm not upset, just want to make sure that you don't think you can do something that I odn't advocate, just because I do it.

Learn from my mistakes/idiocy etc.! It's what I'm here for.

I know. You have been very helpful when I have posted other problems. I just don't know if I'm driving around with a ticking time bomb, or I can hold off for a few days or weeks or so.

So, what's involved with this water pump replacement? Like I said, I heard that getting the fan off is a PITA and would you also change the viscous clutch at the same time you change the water pump, while everything is disassembled?

Thanks.

UPDATE:

OK, so we know, I swapped out the idler pulley bearings. But, before doing anything more drastic, I decided to replace the serpentine belt with an OEM belt. I think someone had replaced the belt a while ago and I don't know if it was the exact one needed. It can be a little confusing as to which belt is the right one, depending on the year of the Disco.

Well, so far, no more squeal!!!!! Let's see how it is over the next few days. Maybe that little whooshing sound I heard when I spun the water pump pulley by hand was normal??? Who knows.

Thanks.
