About a month ago the wife called to say her 05 LR3 was shaking really bad coming home. I was out of town and told her to have the alignment checked and tires balanced. She left the house and everything was fine. A few days later it happened again and she smelt something burning. She got it over to Merchant Tire and they said nothing was wrong "there must have been debree on the rotor". Well today it happened again and she was just outside Richmond so I told her to just got to the dealer.

Has anyone had this happen or have a clue what I could be dealing with?

Thanks
Paul

I just heard from the dealer. It was a bad E brake on the right rear. They are going to take care of it under warranty and replace the brake, computer, and cable. I just have to cover the pads. Does anyone know if this was a recall item?

Not sure, you might check disco3.co.uk and seach for e-brake or emergency brake. You will get a LOT of hits, but mostly about the e-brake seizing up altogether or simply not releasing once engaged. I've only heard of a very few with specific wheel located issues.

Hello, I found this posting when searching for the exact same problem that occurred to me. I had just recently gotten new rear brakes/pads in early November of this year - and within 3 days the first occurance of the "shaking" you describe occurred and my brakes were burning terribly. Once I stopped and pulled over, and let my brakes cool, everything was fine. My husband thought I was crazy because, of course, I could not recreate it. Until, this past THanksgiving when it happened again in the middle of the night about 200 miles from home. Along with the terrible shaking, again, my left rear break seemed to be burning up and smelled awful. I was afraid to drive it on the icy roads so roadside assistance had it towed this past Monday - and the mechanic said the same thing... For some reason my e-brake cable wasn't releasing? Maybe, he said, it had gotten frozen or full of debris, etc... I do live in MT so that is entirely possible.
My question to the original poster is whether or not you had recently gotten your breaks replaced as well? I was certain that the problem was related to that - but now I think it may just be coincidence.
Also, in my case, warranty covered it... however, can anyone answer if this could have damaged my brand new rear brakes?
Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it would effect your new brakes. The e-brake uses drums and shoes that are inside the hub, whereas the primary brakes are the rotors and pads outboard of the hub.

When my left rear EB seized up several times @ 65 mph the dealer replaced the rotor and lining. I think the E-brake works on the small drum that is the inner part of the rotor.

Look at this: http://www.cutawaycreations.com/cutaways.php?project=land-rover-lr3-2005#enlarged

The brake cutaway is the #26 photo.

I had the brakes done a few months ago. My wife only puts a couple of hundred miles a month on it, so they were basicly new.

so why do you have to pay for pads? didnt a faulty part cause the damage to the pads if they were new a few months ago? f that, id tell them to fix it on their dime.

I was going to take up that fight, but I didn't have time that week. I was dealing with phnuemonia. The dealer has also been pretty decent to me. They still give me a loaner even when it is for routine service ( which I will start doing as soon as the warranty is done). I had a problem with the back hatch and my wife drove a Mercedes for a week.

Park brake probably locked up, but that is in the rear only , look at the rotor and see if paint is blistered , if so u will need rotor and park brake shoes minimum,

Puddle Pirate: I had responded earlier to your posting as I had a very similar problem occur to me re: the ebrake. I just received my vehicle back (3 weeks later) after they repaired the ebrake - after driving it yesterday for the first time - the ABS light came on, suspension lowered, etc... I stopped, restarted, and drove home. I'm hoping your wives vehicle hasn't experienced any other issues since her repair. I'm dreading having to get it back in for service if there is now something else wrong due to the repair.

Funny thing though, I have a few hundred miles left before my warranty expires - and I too have also just discovered a CD player issue. It's just stuck in the "ejecting" mode. Sounds like we certainly have vehicles from the same stock!! I'm going to ask my husband to try and figure out the CD issue... but if by chance your problem is similar - can you share with me what your dealer did to fix it? Thanks everyone for your great feedback. This forum is a wonderul discovery! Happy Holidays.

I've had my headunit (the CD player/radio unit) replaced twice thus far because of the CD issue.

I'm off warranty now, and it has happened a few times since then. I just let it go for a few days, and then inexplicably it will allow me to eject the CD. So my "suggestion' is to wait a few days and keep trying the eject it right after starting the car. Has worked for me so far.

However, I hardly listen to CD's anymore. I had an iPod/iPhone connection hardwired into the back of my headunit by a car stereo shop and now use my iPhone for tunes and audiobooks...and tv shows/movies in surround sound!

Thanks nwoods - great suggestion. I'm just going to be patient and continue to try. I'm several hundred miles away from a dealer so It's quite a pain for me to get service.

Yank that HK grap out and replace, I have a kenwood touchcreen with bluetooth, gps, USB, Ipod, DVD, Sirus all "Flush" mounted where the factory radio was, and you still use the factory speakers. It was the easiest install I have ever done including programing the steering wheel remote to work. However the faceplate took a while, I had to custom fiberglass it.
