Its time to start making plans to attend the 18th annual Solaros SAE event.

We have moved the event forward this year to avoid some of the very cold temperatures that we have "enjoyed" over the last few years. This year it will take place at Crawfords Campground, 87 Horton Rd, Murphy NC (near the old Tellico OV area) over the weekend of Sept 16-18.

This is a very scenic area of western North Carolina with hundreds of miles of Forest Service Roads to explore nearby. We will also be about 1-1/2 hours from the Beasley Knob ORV area for those who wish to try some harder core off roading.

For registration and more info see www.sae-solaros.com

We have just confirmed that Shirley Deane - author of "An Unreasonable Woman" will be in attendance at the Solaros SAE event on September 16-18. Shirley attended the Southeast Overland Rally near Asheville in June where she gave a lecture describing her adventures and travels in a Land Rover during the 1960's.

Shirley will be giving her talk at 7:00PM Friday evening September 16th at the campground pavilion at Crawford's Campground , 87 Horton Rd, Murphy, NC. She will also have copies of her book available for purchase and signing.

We look forward very much to welcoming Shirley to joining us for our annual SAE event.

Shirley Deane was born in New York City and was given her first accordion at the age of eight. At 27, she left the United States to work her way around the world playing her own brand of jazz and classical music. She visited 67 countries, living in Pakistan for six months, Nepal for a year, India for eight years, and South Africa for 14 years. She studied music, psychology and philosophy, attending NYU and the University of Hawaii, and for a brief period studied medicine at the University of Munich. She was the first woman to drive a Land Rover from London to Kathmandu, and later managed a clinic at a Tibetan refugee camp in Nepal for the Swiss Red Cross, where she also raised funds and taught English. In 1967, she became public relations officer and fundraiser for Inanda Seminary near Durban, South Africa. She is the author of two previous books, Black South Africans, a Who?s Who (Oxford University Press, Capetown, 1978), which she published under Dee Shirley Deane, and Wisdom, Bliss, & Common Sense: Secrets of Self-Transformation (Quest Books, 1989), which she published under her Indian name, Darshani Deane. Ms. Deane returned to the United States in 1998 and settled in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she now writes.
This book is available at Barnhills in Winston-Salem.

Do we need to reserve campsites with the campground directly like we normally would if on our own, or are camping fees part of the registration fee and you grab whatever site you can get first come first serve at the campground for Friday/Saturday nights?

No reservations necessary for camping on site. First come, first served on spots.

my sisters engagement party got moved to the weekend before so I might try to make this...I keep looking at the map and the drive from Tellico Plains in is making me think about it. I'd like to pull the truck on an 18' gooseneck and am wondering how shitty that last 30 miles is going to be around 10 oclock friday.

Remember, SAE is for all brands of off road trucks, not just rovers. We want everyone to enjoy the sport and event. Make sure you pre-register for the event. Go to the new web site www.sae-solaros.com

Just a reminder that next weekend is the Solaros SAE event near Murphy , NC. We have a lot of really great stuff that will be auctioned/raffled off to benefit the Townes County Habitat for Humanity Chapter. Last year we donated $10,000 to Habitat from the proceeds for this event. All of the profits from SAE go to charity and our club expenses to put on the event are very reasonable. A $50 registration fee plus the optional $15 cost of the Saturday barbecue meal is all that is required for guests to attend - plus we do allow non-Rovers to participate since the goal is to help out Habitat.

Come on down for a great time and see how the Georgia crowd puts on a Land Rover event.
