Was the truck in the ditch under power? It looked like the truck on the road was pulling dead weight. That'll burn up a winch quick.

It was dead weight. It had run off the road farther back and rode the ditch until it came to rest like you see it. What you can't tell in the video is that the frame right behind the cab is on the asphault and the tandems are down in a creek. I don't know much about hydraulic winches, but that sound you can hear was something very bad. It would spool itself in and out, but if you put a load on it it wouldn't do anything. I think the guy said it was a 60k # winch.

In my opinion, the driver should have dumped his load (clay). less weight for the tow truck to drag, then go back for clean up.

Did the tow have a boom (crane/lift)? My opinion again. if so, should have been closer to the dump to pick up the front end off the road, then winch out. again, less dead drag weight. and another system helping with the recovery.

The winch either crapped out, or the high pressure safety valve/switch popped. which what it sounds like to me.

My arm chair version.

They should have called a crane. It was too dangerous to dump the load because the truck was twisted and putting the load up in the air would have most likely caused it to tip over. They did release the gate in the hopes enough would fall out to make a difference. The frame on the edge of the road was all that was holding it from tipping from the start. They ended up pulling the rear of the truck up onto the road with a bigger tow truck with a better winch set up. The truck was a total loss. twisted cracked frame and the wrecker buckled the bed in and cause it to crack in places. The owner/operater only had liability.

I experimented with winches a time or two, but I didn't exhale.

1. The towtruck was undersized for the job
2. He should have strapped or chained to the front of the truck and use the towtruck to just pull it out. He had the front of it up on the pavement already.
3. The towtruck driver was not being very safe or smart at all.

Yes, yes, agreed and he's lucky he didn't end up seriously injured or dead.
