My 300Tdi and drive train have arrived at the shop and now i'm faced with a choice. I had a 94 D1 ready to go, but it has some rust issues. My next choice is a 97 D1, but it needs some cosmetic work. Solid truck, just not pretty. Up next is a 92 RRC. It's in nice shape for a RRC, but i've never really had any love for the classics. My last option is store the engine and pick up a D90 or 110 shell sometime in the future. I'm not a fan of polls, but i'm just not sure which to go with.

why not just buy a west coast disco. we're practically just giving rust free disco's away for free out here. everyone runs the engine into the ground and then scraps them out instead of ponying up the money for a head job.

If you store it, you can spend a lot of time tinkering. By the time you install it, any updates/upgrades you may want could have been installed, parts could be rebuilt or replaced, and you could have powder coated, painted, anodized or even chromed :D everything you want.

An engine in a car is a pain in the ass. An engine on a stand is fun.

Cheers,

I just watched Top Gear's trip across South America that I DVR'd this afternoon and i'm starting to like the idea of a RRC. The one that I would put the engine in is red and looks just like the one in the show. Although I also have a LWB frame that could be used for a defender build too. The major hang up is I have the D1's and RRC, but the defender route will require shelling out more money at some point. Not good for me since the wife says I can only spend the money on this that I make by selling other things.

Gah, I hate it when they say that...

x3 on a pre '96 disco.
Do that, with an R380. Rip out the electronics, install a mechanical speedo, install manual window regulators and you'll have a trouble free rig.

Being the person that containered, shipped, imported, and delivered the drive train for you I'd vote for that classic. I liked it. What Trevor didn't mention is the classic has RTE winch bumper, sliders with nerfs and rear bumper. Thats $2k worth of armor. Another consideration is you would need a different trans for a defender.

Well, seeing as how you are apparently more concerned with what you save on annual fuel costs rather than the discomfort you cause others with your noise and obnoxious fumes, and you obviously can't afford a Range Rover, because that's the only reason anyone bought one of the old Discoveries, I would say that it makes the most sense to put it in a Defender 90 because that way it will appeal the most to similarly cost-conscience buyers when you can finally afford a V8. At least that's what Jeremy Clarkson said.

Could you combine the '94 and '97 to give you a solid '94? I have no idea what the VIN issues might be with replacing a rusted '94 shell a good '97 shell.

Why in the hell would you even consider going through all the trouble to put a 300TDI into a piece of shit? Store it until you find a nice truck with a shit engine and then swap it in. Nice trucks with engines run into the ground are a dime a dozen if you look for them. Fuck the northeast rust buckets, get one from the southwest.

On another note, how much do you want for the 300?
