Has anyone else seen this before? I recently had $3400 worth of work (I know) done on my '99 SD, which included an oil change, had just turned onto a feeder road after driving ~15 minutes, heard a popping sound, saw smoke in the sideview mirror, immediately pulled over and saw oil was pouring from underneath. This is a pic of the culprit. :banghead:

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once and can safely say you need a new engine...

No kidding! Don't know what I was thinking, other than I've had it 13 yrs, always took care of it, ran great, never any problems (other than sunroofs leaking), just couldn't get the death wobble resolved and it was in the 3rd shop for that and a brake fluid leak. Would've been nice if it could have done this BEFORE going into the shop.

If you are willing to take the time and follow a manual and have some basic tools and a hoist, you could buy a freshly rebuilt motor and swap it yourself. Then again, you could just buy a new truck.

PS- glad to see more old-timers coming around the board.

I wish I had those capabilities, would have taken care of the death wobble issue a long time ago and probably got this blown engine fiasco out of the way by now, lol. Still in a bit of shock and the timing couldn't be worse, since I'm in the process of getting things ready to move out of state. One less vehicle to take, but damn, all that money down the drain!!!!!

I want to see pics after the oil pan comes off. Interesting tear pattern in the metal. Straight out. What's everyones guess? Broken crank or snapped rod?

That's really messed up. I think it does look like a rod let go or broke. Never saw that before. You have a hard decision to make. If you fix it are you just throwing good money after bad? If you don't fix it are you leaving all the money you spent already? I think your way better off with that GEMS truck than a disco2. You should be able to pick up a used engine for a good price and then I also think that the shop should help you out a little even if it was no fault of there own. They recomended the 3500 investment to the truck and at very least didn't catch the fact that it was about to let go.
