A simple DWEB Observation...

I always got the feeling that the LRNR's bread-and-butter was people from south-central and midwestern states who saw it as an easy way to take their first Rover trip to Moab and have someone who could show them the trails. It felt like a lot of these folks drove trucks that were less than ten years old, like Discos when D2s were still being sold new. Now that LR is selling mostly glam vehicles, the crowd that would buy a new D2 and take it to Moab has basically vanished or decamped for other brands. I think most of these folks will buy a loaded Rubicon now and go to EJS instead.

What's going on with the rally?
We used to get close to 200 trucks. I am trying to find out how many are in Leadville, CO this week, but I heard unconfirmed less than 50. You are right about the jeeps. Next week, in the same Leadville location, a local jeep club is holding a club level rally and they have 350 trucks showing up. They had to limit how many they got and it sold out. I can't imagine what Moab is like during EJS but the LRNR never came close. I knew it never would though.

It is still funny when I talk to new jeep owners and they complain how unreliable they are and how expensive they are too fix. I just smile...

Damn. Really?

My LR3 has been trouble lately. I've had a D2 and a D1. Even a Classic for awhile. All have been trouble to one degree or another. I can't swing a 110 now, but when I get one, it will probably have an LS1 in it. Why? Because while I love these trucks, they are an absolute piece of shit.

I see post after post where someone has spent time and money fixing up a truck only to have it fail in one way or another.

But I still want a 110.

Damn, you made it look like I didn't capitalize "i".

I'm not a fan of diesel rattle. I am a fan of being able to cruise at 80mph.

It un-capitalized all my letters too. Odd. The beauty of the 4BT/6BT is that they're all mechanical, and you can tune them by turning screws, sliding the fuel plate around, etc. Definitely noisy as all hell, though.

I want something that just....works. Without having to massage it or fingerfuck it or beg it to pretty-please-with-sugar-on-top work. I already have a wife.

Get a jeep.
Or a ford.
Or a fucking hyundai for shit's sake.
You want reliable transportation, Land Rover is pretty much the other direction.

I love my Rover, and I can honestly say in 11 yrs of ownership it has never left me stranded.. Its definetely cost me an arm and a leg to keep it going, but the majority of the money Ive spent on it has been for "upgrades"

That said I don't know how I would feel if it were only vehicle. Ive always said Rovers make great second vehicles. My primary car is a Hyundai that's quiet, comfortable and very economical (I average 30mpg).
The Hyundai may get replaced with a Toyota Tundra so that I can tow the Rover to some of the further events, but the Rover isnt going anywhere!
That being said, If and when the engine craps out.. I doubt I would put another Rover engine back in. The only downside would be not being to register is legally due to emissions testing, but that would just mean I could do the new Cummins crate engine, Atlas T-case and pro-rock60 axles

I just passed 150,000 miles and completed my spreadsheet of the complete history of my 2004 D2 ownership. Want to make sure I'm keeping up with services on transmission, transfer case, differentials, etc.

I think nearly everything under the hood is new....including the engine. Bottle jack and SAI pump are original, would really have to think about it to find out what else is original.

The worst part? I included cost on my spreadsheet. LOL.....with last week's oil & filter change and new rear rotors and pads I just passed $38,110 in costs. This includes all the "upgrades" and extras like suspension, bumpers, winch, tires, misc. trim pieces, door locks, window regulators, etc. from Marty or Will. But it does not include my original purchase price!

How's that bad?
OTOH, between the scarcity of lodging in Leadville and distances to drive to most trailheads, it is fair.
I was only looking forward to Holy Cross when I was considering the trip.
Breck was somewhat better location for this event. Buena Vista could have been a good location, too.

Bill... makes me wonder.

Water pump - replaced around 200kmi, give or take.
Radiator - recored at about 250kmi.
Heads - replaced around 250kmi, along with rod bearings.
Cam, lifters, chain, sprockets, and oil pump - replaced around 275kmi.
I may have gone through a couple of ignition lead sets.
GM p/s pump replaced the clusterfuck that was ZF steering setup, after three or four pumps.
Everything else under the hood is original.

This is at least the 3rd time in Leadville, had close to 200 the last time it was there. For that few people there is plenty of lodging in Leadville, and some will camp as well. Copper Mtn is not far away and has excess lodging all summer while the ski hill is closed. The trails most want to do are a fair drive, that is true, it's not Moab either. Buena Vista is cool, Montrose and Ouray too. The club charter was always to move around the state of CO every other year to hit more trail options.

Don't take it as my bitching - I am fine with driving an hour and a half - two hours to the trailhead. But imagine instead that you were camping near Taylor reservoir - and every trail going in every direction would be yours within fifteen minutes, with almost every level of difficulty covered.

Those FB pages are a joke! I couldn't take it all the stupid questions and when you give them the answer, they get butt hurt because its not what they wanted to hear.
I guess that's the problem with these trucks costing $500.. All the cheap fucks are coming out of the woodwork.
Most of those people dont have thick enough skin to last on DWEB.
This thiiissss THIIISSSSSS.
Not too mention anyone can create one, have zero credibility with their knowledge and then ban anyone that calls them on their BS. You thought you wasted a lot of time trying to stay current with the posts on DW and D-90 on real forums, now you have the same topic, posted on 5 different LR FB groups, all having 30 replies 70% of them wrong. God forbid you correct someone or call ones stupid shit out, you get banned. Then to top it off, its always the most stupid of the bunches that always say "DWeb is horrible".

It's pretty simple, Peter! The Land Rover 4.6L V8 is a piece of shit.
