VERMONT OVERLAND TROPHY
August 7-12, 2013
An overlanding odyssey challenging man and machine while showcasing the best the Green Mountain State has to offer.
Every self-respecting overlander knows the holy grail of grueling overland expeditions, the Camel Trophy. Vermont Overland Trophy is Camel Trophy made practicable and sustainable.
VOT participants will challenge both themselves and their overlanding rigs to four days of punishing vehicle-dependant overlanding designed to challenge the participants’ vehicle capabilities, navigational skills, driving prowess, camping efficiency and physical stamina all with one goal in mind: to simply finish.

Two-truck teams will leave in staggered start each day for four days using maps and navigational aids to follow a pre-designated circuitous route traversing most of central Vermont on unmaintained ancient town byways and country roads. The expedition will include ALL that Vermont overlanding has to offer, everything from lovely, forested two-tracks to all out rock crawling.

Punctuating each day’s route will be a midday featured local vore stop and a mid-afternoon mandatory time check point.

All drivers will need to complete the entirety of each day’s driving route, fulfill the local vore stop requirement, arrive at the afternoon mandatory time check point prior to the deadline AND arrive at that night’s designated camp no later than midnight, with BOTH team vehicles operational, in order to start the next day’s stage.

That is the competition that is laid before us and Team Lucky8 (www.lucky8llc.com) has accepted the challenge putting together two teams of Land Rovers. The Lucky8 teams run the range of Land Rover, with a Range Rover P38, Discoveries and Range Rover Classic.

The trip for some of the team members starts today, with driving across country to join the team at the Lucky8 world headquarters for the final leg to the competition start point.

Updates will be made during each leg of the journey (as cell phone internet coverage permits) Watch her on the forum, and Lucky8’s facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lucky-8-LLC/123570148926?ref=mf) for the latest pictures and stories of the day’s adventures.

We (my team) rolled in to Springfeild, Mass yesterday afternoon, had some chow at the local Outback, and then some libations at Hooters. We will be rolling into base camp around noon. We will be running the 110 and a Disco 2. Check out the 4x4 podcast (starting around #40) for preview interviews and updates during the event.
Now...where are they hiding the local breweries?

Put some pants on Justin. And for christ sake suck in that gut.

Take an afternoon and head up the road to Bridgewater to Long Trail Brewery. It's just east of Killington and west of Woodstock. Woodstock is a cool little New England town (though likely the event will take you through here). All around you is pretty cool of course. Wish I could be up there. You're gonna eat and drink well you dbags!

That's cool. The restaurant backs up to the river and not a bad place to hang out. Tons of other great little breweries around too. VT has the most breweries per capita. The Hill Farmstead is a good one. Killington was never a favorite of mine (too big), but it's still a nice area. Hard to find any bad areas of Vermont though. Those Class IV roads are very cool too. Not many states have that many of them and all digitally mapped as well.

The further north the better. Route 100 is one of the prettiest roads I've been on in the country.

If you want a romantic dinner with Justin this place is the bomb. http://www.simonpearce.com/category/restaurants/quechee.do It's in Quechee.

Sort of regretting not participating in this, but I don't have any friends who would participate anyhow. Maybe we need to organize a small group of Dwebbers to do a run through the state next year.

i admit my truck is a massive pile of shit with a crappy $100 Bottorf bumper bolted to the front. It did however make it through every day of VOT (including challenge trails) except Friday in which we got DNF'd because I missed the checkpoint while in town trying to find brake fluid and without a navigator could not find the trails or necessary checkpoint. Not bad for a 20 year old truck with a 2" lift and 33" tires and no under-body armor. I'm going to spend the next couple months rewiring the shit box so it will not be as pathetic and I can tell how fast I'm going or how much fuel I have. Then I will look in to armor and better looking bumpers that can actually fit a winch.
