Update:
After the VSS was changed, the speedo was still pegged at 140+. Oometer never stopped working (even when pegged) and coorectly.
Got back on the freeway this morning and when I hit 70mph the speedo came down from 140 to 70. Must be the sensor getting enough juice to reset the speedo...

Any leaky fluids? The steering boxes on early disco's are notorious for bleeding claret all over your pristine driveway (Wait...you own a Rover - driveway already screwed)
Perhaps due to heat the inertia switch is triggering for some reason?
I have been fighting a similar problem (replaced wires, plugs, cap, rotor, coil, checked grounds, battery, alternator connections etc etc), turned out to be fuel pump!

The fuel rail has a schrader valve on it. Its on the passenger side (USA) next to the intake manifold further forward on most (Not near the firewall). You can use a tire gauge on it. Carefully of course...
