I have been struggling with operating problems on my '97 D1. Rough idle. Over-fueling at idle. Intermittent cam position sensor problems. O2 sensors dropping in and out. Intermittent speedo. All kinds of crazy stuff.
I have split open harnesses, replaced sensors, etc, etc ad nauseam.

Time for the perfunctory update. The truck is now at 272k miles. The rebuilt steering box was done about 51k miles ago. I have found that on very hot days the seals seep a little after shutdown but running at pressure it does not leak.
I have to say I am astounded that the rebuild has held up...
"If you make money off this you are a f^@%#* as&^$!. No recouping costs of equipment, I'm not recouping anything so if you want to help your friends/club you are doing so for free."
I was thinking thief, slime, scum or butt-munch was a simple enough description. LOL
I have addressed the engine oil lines and am about to do the same for the transmission lines.
Using the original lines the old hose and crimp area were cut away. The ends of the steel lines were cleaned and a brass hose barbed sweated to the end. The barb was a generic brass fitting with the ID...
Bumping this thread. Any luck with making new lines or just take the hit and buy lines from the usual suspects?
I have the crimping tools to put new hose between the hard line sections. I am wondering if the known failures are in hard line fatigue or flex line leaks.
So the fluid was very high. Nearly 1.5 liters. The dipstick then showed the correct level at cold idle.
Two or three laps around the block and the gearbox returned to its former normal behavior.
Lesson Learned: Don't assume the fluid level is correct regardless of who did the service.
Sorry...
I also found the section of the Workshop Manual covering the automatic gearbox. That should help.
After reading it there are a number of problems that can cause the limp mode (3/4). Most point to the regulator. First things first.
So far the stall and manual shift tests passed.
Interestingly though, probably what I get for letting others do ANY service on my vehicle, the transmission fluid level is quite high. I intend to siphon it down to the correct level as well then take it for a drive.
I figured that there has been a failure but I am interested in determining what failed.
I did find a ZF 4HP22 powertrain manual with basic diagnostics in it. I'll start there.
OK, a typo. That was supposed to be "...slow/no...". Sorry.
Recently the transmission on my '97 D1 began exhibiting a downshift problem.
When slowing to a stop it only shifts to 3rd. It will shift to 2nd or 1st if the selector is moved.
I am not an automatic expert but am wondering where I...
I am interested in the results. I have a '97 D1 that is due for shocks (almost 270k on the odo). The ride is getting weird and harsh as the shocks wear. The rears feel OK but the front are due.
'97 D1. Stock, stock, stock.
