Thanks but I don't think that is the case. I know the rocker sound, been through that before, this is much more metallic banging, and as I say sporadic.
I have the exact same idle problem - checked the connectors on the TPS and they all look fine. I am not a technician but how does one trace these faults?
Can I run a wire to the ECU from the TPS or the Coolant Sensor or IACV?
On Page 26 of the Electrical Troubleshooting Rave it says:

How do you identify a slipped liner? My wife's 98 4.0 gets a metallic knocking noise coming somewhere unspecific within the engine from time to time, you can only really hear it when parked next to a bus or wall with your window open. It comes and goes. Is this a slipped liner?
No codes, passed California smog recently too! Took it in one day when it was idling lowish and it passed with flying colours. Off to Testbook - it's the only thing left.
Thank you!
Then it's off to the Testbook for me - I have tried and checked everything you suggested many times over the last few months.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
Thank you, I'll try that this weekend. Do you remember where the loose wires around the intake were in particular? Or let me rephrase that, which bad sensor would make a car idle fast (other than the IACV and TPS)?
Thanks Again,
Cheers.
98 4.0 GEMS disco.
Running perfectly, I foolishly cleaned the IAC valve and on assembly idled high 1500 to 2000.
Been battling this for months - changed the TPS changed the IAC - still idling high. The funny thing is if you stopped the engine and restarted it would idle 1000 rpm lower but still...

When I searched for "Stop Light" I got dozens of pages, none of which had any mention of "Stop Lights": how can I narrow the search to a specific group of words only?
Thank you
My wife's 98 disco se7 has an issue with the right hand (passenger) stop light.
Everything works fine except, if the headlights are on, the right hand stop light doesn't work and turns off the taillight as well.
Thinking it was bad connection on the fairly corroded lamp housing I got a great...
Bought one off ebay for my P38. Worked great for a year until I started getting a slew of codes again. After battling it for 6 months bought a new one from British Pacific and so far so good. I'll let you know if it lasts longer than the 'cheapie' from Ebay.
I can't smell any gas in the coolant nor oil in the coolant either - the car runs great with no misfiring. What other tests are there for head-leaks to coolant? And how does that explain the vacuum? If there was a leak to coolant there wouldn't be a vacuum in the top hose when cold would there...
Well yes there is air in the system. Been like this for months. Followed the RAVE procedure for bleeding but the gurgling persists. any one have any tips for bleeding?
