UPDATE:
First things first...it started!
I finally got under it and had someone turn the key to the on position and could hear the fuel pump start working. Once it stopped running, I started the truck and it fired right up.
Running a little rough, as you can expect. Top end quieted down after...
Thanks for the tips. All help is appreciated. I'm just now getting ready to check the fuel pump and connections.
And yes:
- battery is fully charged
- gauge says tank is 1/3 full
- gas is probably nasty
will update as I go.
Thanks! JR
If the price is right,i'd be interested in the following for my craigslist beater....
Passenger side mirror.
Gas lid (with spare key, if possible)
Rear cargo door hinges
Driver side headlight washer
Thanks!

Yeah, $700 was ok by me....
I checked for spark by putting a plug on the end of the No. 1 plug wire and turning the engine over. Arced to the exhaust manifold. So I figure I've got fire.
I know running it with no water pump is not advisable, but I figure it's ok just to see if it'll start...
Posted this in RR forum, by accident...
I just bought a "backup" 1996 D1 this weekend. It's a backup because I already have an identical one (except mine is an SE7, this one's an SE.)
It's not perfect, but it cleaned up nicely.

The main issue with the truck is that the water pump shaft broke and grenaded the fan. I think the clutch...
Ha! Maybe using the 24mm socket for the crank pulley is the magic trick to doing it by yourself ;)
I used 11 mm for the oil pan and some other stuff. Is none of the hardware on a 96 Disco metric?
Got some good info off the boards when tackling my timing cover job. Thought i'd share how it went, and offer my take on it if anyone's doing the same job.
First of all, because I was without a car, my goal was to get it back together asap, so I didn't do the timing chain or even water pump...
i replaced the wires one at a time, and the truck seems to run too well for that situation.
I'll check though.
But in general, if you're hearing popping noise like that coming back through the intake, are you thinking it might be a timing/misfire type thing? Like I'm hearing certain cylinders...
I've been trying to help a friend with her 99 D1. She's been having problems as described in the "Help for a Friend" thread in this forum.
Don't know how to link to it here, sorry.
Anyway, the CEL is on and it's throwing 1313 and 1316.
That's down from five codes it was showing before we put...
