Quick background: 1997 Series I disco, 150k miles, two years ago I was towing a bike to the shop and the oil pressure light came on. I limped it home the ten miles after the light came on by stopping every few miles and letting it cool (letting it sit the oil pressure light would not...
So I don't have to replace the entire front cover $$$$ just the gears/rebuild if they are toast? I'll pull the cover and see what I can find (when I can get the time together).
If I took oil pressure out of the equation what could cause such a racket?
Also, I've never rebuilt an engine, so this will be a first for me, but would it be better to rebuild, buy a refurbished block, or just pull a used engine from somewhere?
edit: don't know if it matters or not but the...
Hey all, a quick background on my issue:
1997 Disco1 4.0V8 ~150k miles
A year or so ago my oil light started flashing a bit here and there one day. The next day after a ~100 mile trip towing a motorbike the light came on near home and the engine started making a terrible racket. I parked the...
I did my research on this site before tackling this job, so I have a can of right stuff for the gasket :D no cork :D
So malleting a putty knife shouldn't damage anything then right? Good, I'll do that.
I already removed the steering stabilizer (which as I suspected was shot, completely and...
OK, so I parked the rig a year ago when the oil pressure went bye-bye and it was making some terrible oil starved racket. So I'm figuring a major rebuild (i.e. project type fix).
So first things first, remove the oil sump and clean out the crud and sludge and the pickup tube and hope that...
I went out and started it just to see if cooling off would help. She started up but made that god awful gravelly rattling death noise so I shut her down quick. I'm guessing that even if I fix the pressure problem I've got other major issues at work here? What am I looking at?
No, this is...
So PT, do you still recommend cleaning it up and seeing what happens next? I assume the diesel like noise was oil starvation.... does that mean this is the end for her?
Well, I took her the 50 miles and dropped off the bike. No problem, no light.
On the drive home I hit a hill on the interstate and she kicked down and revved up to 3-4k. Soon after I pull off on the exit and the light came on. It stayed on regardless of engine speed. I hit neutral, killed...
Is it a PITA to drop the pan? Do I have to get braces/mounts/etc out of the way first? Or it just unbolt and drop?
So, I'll be ok to make my 100 mile trip tomorrow? So long as I don't spend a lot of time at idle :D
97DI, 120k miles
Synthetic oil
It was pretty damn hot out and I was doing a lot of city driving when I noticed that at a stop or idle the oil light would flicker (sometimes if I was stopped long enough it would come on solid). Give it a bit of gas and the light goes out. Does not come on...
