On any Bosch engine, my first instinct is to clean out and lube the idle control valve. That reminds me, I need to clean out the one on my wife's BMW before winter comes.

This is kind of a desperate, "Hail Mary" sort of suggestion, but double-check the electrical connections to your crank position sensor for corrosion and solidity. Also check that your spark plug wires are all securely connected. I really can't think of anything else.

Funny, but that description sounds like the sound my old MG Midget 1500 made when its viscous fan clutch locked up solid. The 13 blade fan sounded like a gas turbine at the airport, and I could hardly hear the engine burble over it. Everyone asked, "What is up with that car?" One friend...
