no those holes should not be there. at least not in the muffler can it's self. sounds like it's time to replace your muffler. buy a good quality stainless muffler and replace it. also check your header bolt connections to see if they have rattled loose.

we all have v8's. it's standard on a disco. keep an eye on your coolant level for a week or two before you start to tear into anything just yet.

jack up the rear and see if the tire and rim are loose. sounds just like you say 'your bearing or seals are blown. easy fix maybe $40.
