    Driving in Snow

I've heard that some shops charge more or refuse to sipe old tires because of the gravel issues. Discount Tire still sipes tires here in Colorado. You can also sipe tires yourself... here is a thread: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/sipe/

    Driving in Snow

A quick and relatively cheap way to improve snow traction is to have your tires siped. I know a couple Jeep drivers that get poor ice traction from chunky mud terrains and they swear by siping. If you look at modern studless snow tires they have a lot of sipes, or little cuts/grooves/squiggles...

Good Machine Shop in Denver. Colorado area?

I've been doing a lot of number crunching on this... if I'm lucky, I'm out $170 to resleeve a cylinder, machining costs of $22 per head and $45 for the block deck, $200 for a gasket kit/headbolts, $75 for a new water pump, plus new thermostat, coolant, oil and filter. So about $600 in parts and...

Good Machine Shop in Denver. Colorado area?

I spoke with Jeff, who is a great guy. He reccommended dropping in a new 4.6 short block, which apparently uses new and improved casting methods... problem is those run $4500 or so. His shop doesn't do machine work. So I called Western Engine Supply (303-286-1903), and they do install top hat...

Good Machine Shop in Denver. Colorado area?

Thanks for the responses! I flushed out the cooling system and confirmed the source of the heater core blockage today-- it is an airlock caused by combustion gasses. I'll give Jeff et al. a call tomorrow. I'm a few months out from yanking out the engine due to other projects, but I will post...

    why change the oil filter?

For those of you using TG16, PH16, or ST16 filters (Fram Tough Guard, Fram, Supertech)-- take a look at TG8A, PH8A, or ST8A. Has the same thread diameter, anti-drainback and 12psi relief valve-- but it is larger and has more filter media. When I picked up the ST16 I was disturbed by how...

Do you think my block is cracked?

Were you able to pinpoint the problem? Just bought a '00 D2 with similar symptoms as yours, PO was told by the dealer service dept that it had a slipped liner. No steam in the exhaust, no oil/coolant milkshake in the engine. Symptoms: no heat, air in the coolant (PO they said they were...

Good Machine Shop in Denver. Colorado area?

Thanks for the leads... the heater core in the D2 is blocked... I'm going to flush it and the entire cooling system once it gets a little warmer... but there are definately combustion gases getting into the coolant. If I'm lucky, it is just headgaskets. But the PO had the headgaskets replaced...

Machine shop in CO (tophat liners)

Just bought a '00 Disco with a head gasket leak/possible slipped liner. The prior owner had the headgaskets replaced in Feb 2007; now combustion gases are back in the coolant, so I am preparing for the worst. Do you have to re-sleeve all the cylinders, or would it suffice to re-sleeve only the...

Good Machine Shop in Denver. Colorado area?

Any reccommendations for a machine shop in the Denver, Colorado area? I'm about to buy a '00 Discovery with a slipped liner. I'm looking for a shop that will re-sleeve the slipped cylinder and pin it, and pin the other 7 sleeves while they are at it. Thanks!:patriot:

    Mileage on RRC?

If I were trying to squeeze out every last mpg possible, I'd try: 1) synthetics in the crankcase, transmission, front/rear/center differentials 2) if it hasn't been done recently, a full tune-up of the engine 3) run higher tire pressures on pavement for less rolling resistance

    Mileage on RRC?

Emissions, registration and plates for a sub $1000 car where I live are less than $100 total. 6 months insurance costs me $100. I can understand not everyone wants to drive a Prizm. There aren't POS, though. They are a rebadged Corolla, and quite reliable. They go for a lot less than Corollas...

    1991 Classic will not start

Land Rover has a lot of TSBs on no-start when cold issues, especially on the '93 LWBs. I was having cold start issues once ice and snow hit (mine would crank, though), and tried the following: 1) switched to synthetic 5w40 (Rotella T from Walmart) 2) cleaned all grounds and connections...

    Mileage on RRC?

If you buy a $1000 gas-sipper (older civic, prizm, etc) it will pay for itself in gas savings in an year. Plus you have something to drive in case the RRC breaks down. My '97 Prizm gets 34-37 mpg. Same car was listed for $800 bucks on craigslist this week needing a bit of work. I drive 12,000...
