My only modifications are OME shocks and coils with nitto Terra Grappler 265/75 R16 tires. My problem is my brakes frequently pulse(it makes a springy clunky sound) and it hinders my stopping. I just replaced both my front and rear rotors and brake pads and that did not solve the problem. If someone has some feedback It would be much appreciated, I cant wheel under these conditions :(

Thanks:)

Thanks for the reply. My ABS light does come on periodically but not all that often. My Disco has 60,000 miles on it and runs great other than the brake problem. The ABS is working but seems ultra sensitive. The other day I was coming to a stop, I gradually slowed down from 30 to10mph and then the ABS activated making a funky sound. I wonder what would cause my ABS to operate so strangely?

Pull the fuse

Sounds like bad ABS sensor(s) or sensors that are not resetting properly. Get the sensors checked out asap before you run into somebody. In the meantime, Pull the ABS fuse and you should have predictable braking restored.

Where is the fuse located, what # is it?

Thanks!

I have the same problem on my '96 D1. Funky ABS. Apparently a lot of people have pulled the fuse and left it out. It seems the sensors aren't very good and they're very expensive. I haven't gone that route yet, but that goofy ABS pumping the brakes for no good reason is getting irritating and could be dangerous. I wonder if a safety inspector would notice ? Seems ironic that this is supposed to be a safety feature.

i had the same issues with my ABS on my 97 D1, i disconnected the electrical plug at the abs pump in front of the master cyl. that cured some funky brake stuff. Then i removed the bulb on the dash for the damn light ;)

I suppose I'll be doing the same. Harvey didn't mean to hi-jack your thread, but this seems to be an all too common issue with our year rig. Thanks DavidZ!

Harvey,

Try checking the ABS sensor air gap at each wheel. While your checking the gap make sure it's clean and you haven't picked up junk while wheelin. You should also check the abs wheel that fits in the rotor. Make sure the slots are clean. Any metalic dust will play havoc with the system. Another possibility is an intermittant abs sensor electrical connection at the connector.

I'm at work

I'll look when I get home, but IIRC its labled and in the fuse box under the hood. The underside of the cover to the box has the legend on it. Find the box in the engine bay, near the passenger side fender. Disconnecting the plug works too.

ETA: Yes, location as stated above. There are 2 fuses though: one for the ABS valve, one for the ABS pump. I think I only pulled the ABS valve fuse when I had this problem. It's been less of a problem since I had the rotors replaced so my fuses are both installed.

My 98 LE is doing the exact same thing- isn't there a box under the seat or something that can give you an errot code and tell you which sensor? That dust explanation sounds very likely- I was thinking of getting ceramic pads because 3 days after I wash it the wheels have brake dust again. It seems to me that much dust might conceivably be causing a sensor problem?

No more. I think not since 95 MY, and even then, not sure if it displayed ABS codes. I never heard of brake dust causing an error. Sorry, don't know if that's a possible cause.

Hey Pete: Same problem here with my 1998 D1. I went to the car wash in *hopes* that it would solve the problem after I washed all the dust away. Nope, ABS is still on. I might pull the fuse like Tom said. Mine pulse a lot and it scares me becuase they dont stop me when they pulse. Eek!! I changed my pads out about three weeks, no luck. ABS still there ..Mine is a sensor. I just can not figure out which ones. Good Luck!! Melissa
Be Careful!!
