Truck One.
1989 Land Rover 110 (True) County Station Wagon (Registered as a 1973 Series III 109)
RHD
V8 3.5 Rover Engine with Edlebrock 4 bbl intake and carb
Interior is great for the year, no major rips or tears
Frame is Excellent
Firewall is excellent
Door Post Excellent
Doors are new

The truck is in great condition. Here is what has been done since I have owned her. There are no known mechanical issues with the truck.

1. New OME Springs and Bilstein Shocks installed less than 500 miles ago
2. Brand New Genuine Doors Installed, with new Window Regulators and tracks
3. New Paint (White)
4. New Windscreen and Sealing Rubber
5. New Floor Mats
6. New Red (Hard) Poly Bushings
7. All Fluids drianed and replaced

The truck is ready to drive accross the country. This is a daily driver. Clock shows 150K, however the engine and driveability say differntly. The truck has not been off road since I have had it and it looks as if it has never been off road.

Truck 2
1991 110 2 door hard top. (Not Registered Yet, but will be insured and registered with a valid Florida Title)
1991 200TDI with 380 gear box
frame is excellent
body is great, but is a very poor color choice
Runs great. Truck has spent the last three years in the desert.

This truck has been converted, in the cargo area, to a camper for the sake of a better term. It sleeps two and has spaces for a propane cooker, fridge, and lots of storage.

Known issues
1. Although the paint and body are in great condition, this is the worst color I have seen on a Rover.
2. The steel cappings around the rear bed are rusted and will need replacement as the truck is painted. I have the new cappings in route along with new seals for the top and winshield. Cost for cappings is appx $300.00 and it would take about 4 hours to replace all.
3. All fluids should be drained and changed
4. Engine tuned as it seems to have a loss of power on hill climbs
5. The seats and interior are in good shape, but if I keep the truck I would replace the current with a trim line from Exmoor

PLease enlighten me as to how you are going to register and insure the second truck? And have there been any problems registering, inspecting, etc. the first truck? what aill happen if some masshole hits me a week after i buy it? will it be impounded? ive always wanted a 110, although i really want a crew cab or conv.

and will you take a modified 2000 d2 (clear registration) for trade?
how bout a 2002 bmw F650 gs DAKAR?

I am not sure about the registration issue. I had no problem here in Florida. I did not change or alter the VIN or data plate in any way. My insurance company had no problems insuring the truck for what I assumed the value to be. I have restored several 109s and have had each insured for 20k each. When I went into my agents office they took pics and took down the VIN info. I can't be of much more help as my only experience is in Florida. The 110 Station Wagon was registered in VA, before I purchased it. In VA it was registered as a Series III. I did not see a reason to change that when I registered in Florida.

The second 110 has not titled here in the US yet. I have tomorrow off and hope to take the hours to stand in line. I will post the details once complete. Again I do not intend to alter the VIN or data plate.

altering the plate is inconsequential- it's fraudulently registered and a felony.

Are you telling the DMV the other one is a '91? Neither the TDI or the vehicle itself were certified for that year in the USA. EPA or DOT can have customs confiscate and crush the vehicle, or you can apply for a one year waiver that allows you to use it for promotional or off-road only use after which it is exported or destroyed. Sad but true. Otherwise a lot of us would be driving late model Defenders.

73 Series III Registration

I purchased this truck with a clean and clear VA title from a Marine Stationed in the DC area. When I went into the DMV here in Florida I had a bill of sale and the VA title. The tax clerk went out and checked the VIN and milage and issued me a new plate and Florida title. I am building a 109 on a 110 rolling chassie now, and see no problems with getting that registered also. My insurance company has not had a problem either. I have the truck insured for 20K and there where no questions asked.

As far as the blue maybe it is the stickers that drive me crazy. I have a paint shop lined up for a respray and color change, but I have not made a firm decision on the color yet. Also considering stripping the truck and making it a 130 Crew Cab with a 300TDI. Once that is done she would be a lit car. Kits, mostly hot rods, are all over the road in Florida. Will keep everyone posted if I can't sale it quickly. Need the driveway space.

Sorry no trades for a Motor Cycle sold mine to do more Rover Stuff

I guess some people will always make an excuse for doing something they know is wrong/illegal. You know it's registered as something other than what it is and you know that you wouldn't be allowed to register it as the vehicle it truly is.
No integrity.
Your insurance company (and the one representing any other driver involved) will probably come after you when/if payout time comes. That's when the vast majority of illegal imports are caught. An insurance investigator knows a lot more than a tax clerk about vehicles.
A neighbor of mine (who drives an 88 as a daily driver) is a former customs investigator and worked a lot with gray/black market import cars and we've discussed this type of thing a few times. It last came up when someone tried to pass off a Mini with fraudulent vin in a deal with me.
It doesn't matter if someone previously got it registered somehow- the vehicle is confiscated if it is discovered regardless. Ignorance is not a defense- anyone who buys is is rolling the dice...

safarirover mentioned kit cars. My question is, and I'm not trying to stir anything up I'm just curious, how can someone build a car in their garage and it be street legal? But a vehicle as this, which is built in a factory is not street legal?
Is it becasue of import laws? The vehicle was imported without Customs knowing about it? I am just trying to clarify why this particular vehicle is in danger of being crushed. Obviously I am ignorant to the law...
I agree with Steve... Just because you have the vehicle insured does not mean it is legal. As soon as you have to make a claim the insurance company will be after you.

Exactly....You don't think your insurance company will hesitate writing that check when they find out it's registered as a 1973 Series III 109 but it's really a 1989 Land Rover 110? Should they write a check for a '73 or a '89....or maybe just no check at all. Above & beyond all this is the blatant illegality of it all.

Those are sweet trucks you have there, Safarirover, I think we all agree with that. I'm also pretty sure that your intentions are good, but there's a reason you have to play games the registration......a real '89 110 just isn't allowed to cruise mainstreet USA. I wish it were otherwise, but it wishing doesn't make it so.

Ok, I agree with Steve.

I am not trying to rip anyone, nor do I wish for anyone, down the road, to face some sort of legal action, including myself of course. I spoke to my insurance company and the tag office this morning. Of happen stance the guy at the tag office is a Rover fan and suggested taking the truck apart and rebuilding her as a kit or custom car. I asked my insurance company about this and they stated, it would be insured just as a hot rod would be.

Brings me to another interesting point. On going I have a 1963 Series II 109 under way. The body sits perfectly on a 110 chassie with a Rover 5 Speed and 3.5 V8. I have spent every waking minute for the last 6 months building Frankinstein. According to the DMV as long as frame swap is included, it is legal. I question places like TLR, how they build and sale 110s and 90s every day.
As of this morning the blue 110 is off the market, until I figuer out a legit way to make this happen. David Gage has built several of these, anyone know how it happens. I will part out the Blue 110, as I have the 109 to work on at the moment. I have a 109 wagon with a bad frame that will arrive next week.

Wow, that 109 is beautiful! The classic look upgraded to coils. Very, very nicely done.

It's also nice to see that people do the right thing because it's appropriate. Good job again.

I would speak with your insurance about a garaunteed policy. You can purchase one for the amount of the build in case it is stolen or totaled. You'll need all the receipts from the build and a appraisal if I remember correctly. Might cost a bit more, but when they offer you the fair value on the 109 VIN you'd be out a pretty penny.

You can swap the frame and use the certificate of origin from the frame to generate a new VIN on a custom/kit vehicle. It's not that hard. Some people I've known have used the engine ID to generate a custom/kit title basing the year of the vehicle on the engine block- in that case it was titled as a 67 Cobra because it was a 67 Ford 427 block. I still think it was wrong to get 'Cobra' on the title when it was a fiberglass copy- but oh well.

What would happen in the case of the 110 is that if the insurance company was to get involved in a settlement, it would be discovered at some point there is a 'problem.'
At that point the contract is null and void since the contract was written on a different vehicle, meaning the 110 has no insurance at all.

According to the EPA, the only way you can use the TDI would be off-road use only. Even if you put it in an antique vehicle, the EPA now claims that the engine AND the vehicle have to meet the minimum emissions standards for their respective years. So if you put a 92 Mustang engine in a 67 Mustang, it must meet 92 emissions standards. Put a 67 Mustang engine in a 92 Mustang and it must meet 92 emissions.

Of course, in many areas there is no inspection and no enforcement of the Fed guidelines.
