Ok, this one has me stumped. MY 98 D1 starts to make a hight pitch squeal after about 20 min of driving. It sort of sounds like a brake pad rubbing, a high pitched loud squeal. but upon inspection, nothing is out of the ordinary. When it is making the noice if you hit a bump, or turn the steering wheel or touch the brakes it goes away for a few minutes and then comes back. I also had it in to my local shop and they didn't see any thing dragging or rubbing as far as the brakes were concerned. Any idea what I should check now?

are you sure it is come from the brakes? coul it be that one of your calipers is not up to par and that it is not fully retracting or not fulling extending? causing your pad to "wedge" itself agian the rotor? maybe when you hit a bump or turn the whell sharply enought it knocks the piston loose. if you are sure it is coming from the brakes it might be worht pulling the pads off to inspect the calpers.

My 98 does the same, I replaced all the pads ( Napa Autoparts OEM replacement) recently, and the high pitched squel started.
I pulled all the pads and they look good, checked the discs, one had a thin grove in it, probably fa small stone got trapped between the pad and rotor somehow after i replaced them. Took some 2000 grit wet or dry ( find at Home Depot) and smoothed out the grove. Noise has gone away.
Worth a look, also add anti squel goo to the back of teh pads when you put them back in.
Good luck

NAPA doesn't carry OEM (Lockheed) pads - just FYI

Sometimes the wheel seals get dry & squeal against the spindles. Can you localize it to one axle?

I know exactly the squeal you're talking about, and in my case it was the wheel bearings. Check those out while you're at it.

Steve, you are correct, the pads they (NAPA) supply are their "premium grade" made in germany, not OEM. anyway, stil had the squel and was trying to offer another suggestion.
