ABS Warning Light

Hi, my ABS Warning light came on in my 95 Disco the other day while riding along, listening to a little Pink Floyd. I was a little concerned but the thing still stopped when I wanted it to, which was a good thing! However it never came on again until today. Same thing riding a long, listening to some tunes, no worries, and I glance down and the bloody thing is lit again (what the F@#k I thought). Again no problems with braking. (This time there we no Floyd playing).
However I know this means that there is some issue with the ABS system, but what I don't know is how do you diagnose the issue? The manual says 'take it to a certified dealer' and have it checked out (Big bloody help).
Any of you guys or gals out there got any suggestions? ...and no wise cracks about the music! :p

practice using your emergency brake

When our abs light went on on our 94 range rover, the abs pump failed shortly afterward. It gave my wife a good scare but she was luckily not going fast and instinctively used the e-brake. My mechanic said it happened to another one of his customers while on the freeway. He narrowly avoided a high speed collision.

Good News For Discovery Owners

Good news for Disco owners. Discovery uses a entirely different ABS system when Range Rover. The ABS pump also provides the boost for power assist (Hydroboost) so when the pump fails......No more assist.

Discovery uses a Vacuum Booster like just about every car out there does. So, the chances of that happening are extermely slim.

Now I am starting to get concerned! On the way home last night it was not the "Anti Lock" (ABS) warning light that came on but the "Brake" light. According to the manual when this comes on while driving it is an indication of a brake system problem. (Normally this only comes on when the hand brake/energency brake is applied.) I put the emergency brake on and relesed it (while I was stationary) and the brake light extinguised, but it came back on a few miles down the road. What gives? I can't look at the rover tonight but will need to give the brake system a going over tomorrow. Any pointers or suggestions on what thi smay be or where to start. There is no obvious signs that there is a leak (I.E. no brake fluid anywhere).

I gave everything the once over. There were no obvious signs of any leaks and the pads/rotors etc are all in good shape. The ABS sensors in the front wheels did move slightly when I pushed them home. So hopefully they are now properly seated which will stop the "Anti Lock" warning light coming on. Will check it out this coming week. (Fingers crossed).

Well folks. My ABS warning light came on again. It seems that it comes on when I hit a small 'bump' in the road. The braking on the vehicle is fine.
When I reset the vehicle (switch off and on the ignition) and start the ignition, the ABS system does its self test and everything checks out. The "Anti Lock" light extinguishes as it should once the car is above 5mph. However when I am driving and hit a small bump in the road the light comes on, stays on until the ignition is shut off. Any thoughts???
