So I'm fairly certain my Ac compressor is toast. I plan on doing the swap myself, but was wondering if I replace it at home, will I damage it by driving to the AC shop with no freon in the system? I've read a lot of conflicting information.

no. the amount of a/c systems that i deal with that are driven let say through the entire winter being empty and not noticed till the spring and then fixed and run fine is like in the 100s! before you recharge the system with most a/c machines they pull a vacuum on it to suck all the moisture and whatever out. so wouldn't worry about it.

Before you replace your whole compressor educate yourself about how it works. It might be fixable with a solenoid on the back of it. I’m super busy right now or I would dig up the info for you. This compressor is not your fathers ac compressor.

What I read is that since these compressors are never fully disengaged. Running it without freon could cause the piston to seize.
