High pitch whine, could be diodes, could be bearings, could be a mix. Do some homework around your area and call a few shops and see who will rebuild a Mirelli (misp?), stay away from those who will not, they are wasting your time. You have many options if you can find someone who has rebuilt these in the past and will give you at least 1-year.
Bosh is a larger jobber for rebuilds that can be purchased at local auto parts store ($165) lifetime warranty that they have to handle, not leave you high and dry dealing with Bosh.
Getting your old-one rebuilt, little cheaper, but what about that warranty?
Get a new factory replacement or Mean Green, prices start to hover in mid $200 and higher.
It's not an 'all rebuilds are crap' world. I have to laugh at people who still think the world is so linear just because their thinking is linear.

The alternator on my 01" Disco II is going bad, only charging at 14.2 and is starting to make noise. Does anyone know where in the Chicago area I can either get it rebuilt or replaced without going through a dealer?

Thanks,

Just look in the yellow pages under Automotive Electrical Repair. A good shop can rebuild them. For dependability I'd stay away from rebuilds from a mass rebuilder, like the rebuilts you get from an auto parts store.
If you can't find a good rebuilder, call around to some heavy truck service centers, they can tell you who's good in your area. Many heavy truck shops have their own rebuild shop.

Here's another option. Buy used. I've always had good luck.
Salvage yards will give a warranty with the part.
I just paid $100 for a used alternator from www.mmauto.com that only had 15000 miles on it.
BTW an output of 14.2 volts does not indicate a bad alternator.
