Any problem with driving with the crossmember removed?

Hey Dean,
I don't know what would be best as far as leave it off put it back on. But I do have to do the ATF and remove that crossmember and "Y" pipe on the exhaust. I tried to get the crossmember down but it was up there pretty good and I didn't have the time to mess with it. What did you use to get it down? Is there anything I should be aware of when I drop the exhaust?

Thanks

Sorry to hijack the thread you can email or IM me if you feel so inclined.

Peter, I sprayed WD40 all over the mating plate where it hold onto the frame, and then beat it with a rubber mallet towards the front of the vehicle. It moves about 1/4" each time. If you move it just past the return pipe you should be good.

Getting it back might be another story....

(I heard some people using scizzor-jacks and evern a high-lift to get the thing out)

I replaced my clutch a few months ago, that's what I did, just whail away on it till it dropped out.
If it's just a run to the autoparts store, or around the block, you should be fine with it out. I wouldn't go to Tellico without it though. ;)

No big deal to dropping the exhaust. Just undo the bolts that hold the rubber hangers on.

I may have been the fortunate one but I was able to wiggle the crossmember from between the frame with the help of a flat bladed screw driver. Placed the blade between the crossmember brackets and the inside of frame(mating surface). Went back from side to side (of the crossmember). Proceded with this approach and after a few minutes I was able to dislodge the entire crossmember.
If you servicing the ******, don't forget to install the crossmember FIRST before you install the y-pipe. Like a idiot I didn't head this advice...I now have to remove the y-pipe and re-install the crossmember THEN the y-pipe. Be extra carefull with the exhaust manifold studs, mine stripped fairly easily.

Another simple approach for spreading the frame and removing the x-member, good ol 2x4 cut to length. Worked like a charm for me instead of highlift or banging&banging on that x-member.

I use the one I have primarily for heavy colision work. It does however come in handy for all kindsa shit. You will be surprised at how many uses you find for it. Just get a cheapy as it mostly stays in its box.. Turns that crossmember job intoa couple minute ordeal instead of beating and hammering..

EDIT:

Hmmm not as cheap as I remember. Which one would be best bet: 10 ton ($240) or 4 ton (160)? Both have a bunch of accessories and look similar.
