Who would you take a ZF trans to get it repaired? Rover just got replacement units for us. I have always heard some people fix them but I've never found anyone who I believed when He told me he could do it.

I have no first hand experience in rebuilding a ZF but I was under the impression it was a fairly popular transmission. I seem to remember the bmw folks having good insight in rebuilding/modding these units

The transmission in my D1 is about to pack it's bags and head south. I'll be tearing it open soon. I'll do a write up.

BMW and Audi forums are good resources for ZF rebuilder reviews. There's obviously Ashcroft, but you're shipping from overseas.

My Trans vent was sealed shut when I took the rover for a bath in a river and got stuck.

Long story short clutch plates fell off from the water ingress and neutralized. Found a local shop to rebuild it for a couple K.

Said it was also used in a BMW 323 or something so yeah BMW forms might be better to search.

Personally if I had to do it over again, I'd just swap to a manual.

I’m probably going to fix this thing myself. Since I can’t find anybody locally to fix it. I’ve done tons of transmissions while I worked for GM. I know a retired BMW shop foreman with a bad attitude. The kind of attitude you only get when you’re really that good. I see me spending some time with him soon.
I’ve watched the videos and am looking for hard parts now before I pull it. I keep getting involved in shit nobody else wants to do. I’m thinking $2400 plus parts.

discostew works at landrover dealer? do you guys re build any transmission at landrover?
No. I went to work for Land Rover after Oldsmobile died. At GM, like you know, parts are available and you are rebuilding it. For whatever reason ZF transmissions always just got replaced. But they rarely failed in the warranty period anyway.

The 4hp22 in your d1 is an ancient fully mechanical transmission. Nothing wrong with that, we have a bunch of them. Replacing torque converter & clutch packs in those is pretty easy.
The transmission being talked about in the Lr3/4 and 322 is a fully electronic 6spd transmission.
