Yep - it would be cheaper - but I wanted something that rolled up neatly and stayed connected to the roof rack.

It's easy to make your own attached tarps that roll up and don't have ground poles. You won't be able to get 9' because of the weight, but you can get a nice awning. I'll take some pictures and post the steps and materials involved.

For less than the EZ-up you can get a Quest 12x12 at Dick's sporting goods... survived MAR winds and even has optional tents, walls and mosquito net inserts.

I was considering an awning with the folding arms that doesn't need the ground poles- kinda like Hannibal. Problem is that mounting them on the outside of the roof rack rails means that it'll last maybe a day before a tree takes it out. One day I'll make some mounts to mount the awning inside the rack rails when not in use.

Steve - I've been thinking about that sort of idea but instead of folding arms - I was thinking telescopic arms may be a solution. I went out this evening and brought two sections of aluminium tubing 1" od and 3/4" od - now to start playing with it

I don't know if you guys are familiar with the Italian company called FIAMMA that manufactures awnings for RV's and SUV's. They are the awnings used by one of the sponsors of our club here in SoCal (Adventure Trailers LLC). They're a bit pricey but seems to have the features you're looking for. I believe they have an office in Florida where you can place your order. The pictures below are courtesy of the two companies mentioned hereinabove. Just click on the links for further details. Hope this helps. :D
