Greetings Discovites,
Can someone please explain to me just what exactly the inertia switch does when it is activated?

more specifically when activated....

1.) Does it prevent the Disco from CRANKING (this is not the same as running)?

2.) Does it prevent the Disco's fuel pump from operating?

3.) Does it inhibit the ignition coil system?

4.) Does it inhibit the fuel injectors?

Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, but I've received different information on what the inertia switch is supposed to do.

Regards,
DiscoEd

That avator is hilarious. Is that you?!? :D
Not sure how, maybe it shuts off the fuel pump. It also unlocks the doors and turns the hazards on.

It does turn off the Fuel Pump.

Yep, it kills the pump. Take one apart sometime. Its a neat deal, It has a marble in it that when jolted hard, shut it down.

O.K. So I think the concensus is ....

O.K. So I think the concensus is that if this inertia switch is tripped that the fuel pump would definetly not run under any circumstances until the switch is reset.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Fuel Pump shuts off and truck stops running.

Unlike your other car which is running and I just saw go past my drive.
You'd better go catch it!

Per the factory service manual....

4.12 DISCOVERY
An inertia switch is located in the engine compartment. In the event of a
collision, the inertia switch will trip. When the inertia switch is tripped with the
ignition on and the alarm disarmed, all doors will automatically unlock and
locking of the doors will be prevented until the inertia switch is reset.
The locking system can be interrogated using TestBook for diagnostic
information.

Further reading also indicates that all power connections travel through the interia switch so yes, your full pump and system will be shutdown. It will be essentially like removing a battery cable.

It's there to piss you off when you acidently cause it to "switch off." Piece of shit.

You could use it as a kill switch if you wanted too...

... your car won't start!

(Only problem is your battery will die from the flashers flashing. Another problem is your doors will be unlocked and someone could steal all the shit out of the truck... but at least they couldn't drive it off!)
:D
