Bang on tight cornering....

After a recent trip with lots of winching and pulling, my disco has twice given out a loud bang when tight cornering, once in a 180 degree cul-de-sac turn, and once turning into my driveway. I checked the CDL is not engaged, although I have not tested to make sure, as its pissing with rain right now. It does not scrape over gravel so I dont think its stuck engaged. Any other ideas? I have open diffs.

Thanks, Dean

You might want to lift rig and make sure that you still have CDL/axles/diffs in one piece. Maybe drain the diff and check for broken parts.

If the CDL is not locked, it should not be an axle or diff. You sure it's not something dumb like a loose shock?

I blew my rear diff (thought that I only broke rear drive shaft yoke) and while I was driving home I had a could bangs when internal parts continued to grenade. Not until I got to the garage and tested for axle/diff breakage did I realize what had gone wrong.

Any idea where the bang was coming from?

Just wondering... could it be something simple like maybe you need to regrease?

A few months ago I went after the gunk under my truck with my power washer. When I finished, I had clumps of thick blue greasy stuff that looked just like gel toothpaste underneath the front of my truck - most was in the area of my tie rod and the front wheels.

When I took my truck up to the dealership to ask them what the blue stuff was, they told me that I had pressure washed out the thick grease that cushions and prevents the parts from banging together when cornering.

Good Luck, Jamie

Jaime, who ever told you that was just plain blowing smoke...it's a load of crap. grease cushion for cornering? come on now, your smarter than that.... the grease was most likely from someone over greasing you rod ends and u-joints. there is not a "grease cushion" on you discovery...

Hey Dean, i agree w/ Dan, it's probably something stupid that has loosened up...time to get dirty ;)

Definitely, I agree, could very well be something that loosened up.

Ok, when you turn, left or right turn only or doesn't matter?
On a bump or pothole any bang?

I seem to be going through Shock bushings right now.
Banged only when hitting bump or pothole. Was only occasional at first then constant. Mystified me until about the 10th time I went under the truck trying to figure out what was wrong when I realized the bushings on the lower mount of the shock were gonze at the front.
Now the back shock bushings are going too.....

yeah- check radius arms, trailing arms, steering linkage... all the bushings. a bushing can go out and easily cause just what you described. the first sign is that it will only happen on turns/acceleration, deceleration.

where i'm at right now, duh...
My first bet, Panhard Rod. My truck has done that before. Tighten the rod to 88nm on both ends.

It's a noise that only occurs when you make a sharp turn, like on a side street for example.

Ok thanks all. The noise was this: Imagine doing a slow 180 turn on a nice smooth surface. Almost all the way round and there was a heavy bang, hard to tell where it was but I think its near the back, but cant be sure. Felt like an axle blew, gave a jolt to the vehicle. Happened twice, but seemed to drive perfectly today all day. I'll have a check. While driving and bouncing around its nice and solid.

Were you in Diff Lock?

Dean - hate to say it, but there is some missing info. How frequent was the bang? Was it every tire revolution? At this point I can think of quite a few things: Axle, diff, CV, driveshaft, and - believe or not...lug nuts.

There are other possibilities, but you can check the all of the above in 20-30 minutes. Narrow those down and then come back and tell us what it was.

Then go back to the above suggestions: start with arms. My D2 did this after lift unless the radius arms were very tight. Even with the D1 I still have to tighten every so often. If this does not solve it go with the panhard, track rod, and anything else that could bind-up and couse this.
