Big Tyres

for my next discovery, it'll be a D1. I want to go for 3" springs and 1" spacers for the lift. How will a 32"x11.5"x15 tyre look on 15"x8" wheels? If the 265x75 R16's we have on the D2 are 31"X10.2" it has 1" spacers on the back and HD springs on the front and the tyres look a little big for it and rub on flex. will a 4" lift on a D1 be enough to clear that size tyres? also will it put considerable stress on other components like bearings that will wear out 5 times faster as a result? 245x75 R16's looked really small on the XD with a 2" lift so i think it'll be ok.

Cheers

Yes and Yes large tires and lift will stress every component of the suspension and driveline IMHO.

Your list of problematic areas for a 4" lift is way to small. Add to the list...axles will break easier (big tires), driveline vibes mean ditch the rotoflex if it has one. 4" will require front and rear driveshafts. You might want to think about offset radius arms and caster correction, You should get longer shocks, lowered mounts and extended brake lines as well. Doing such a lift needs to be done right or you are doing to end up with less articulation than stock and you DO NOT want that.

I have ended up doing all of the above as the result of 3" lift.

32" tires will work pretty well with a 2-3" lift IHMO. I run 235/85 which are close to 32" but definitely not 11.5. Make sure they stuff before you do it (they should).

most people run 235/85-16 with a simple OME lift without issues, well trimming the rear fender isn't an issue is it????
You could add an inch by installing D2 isolators and packs (www.expeditionechange.com) for an extra inch. take a look also at www.rovertym
Even more space for tires is possible with the fender flares sold by DAP in VT. Maybe even 34-5... See ECR's Discotech project.
Getting a touch over the top would be adding the body lift.
With all that lot, you'll need to replace the driveshafts with extra UJs, change the gearing in the diff, replace the halfshafts, replace the front CV with a 110 unit..and delete the ABS
and of course unless you are Bill Gates empty most of your wallet.....

Maximum articulation coupled with traction ie lockers is the holly grail

My Disco is running 265 mtr's with SG three Link 3" lift, GRB axles, and ARB lockers front and rear.

that's exactly what i was running. well JEK II and 3 link with 245's. but the tyres just looked too small for me. i'm not sure if i can afford to buy another discovery that will be reliable and do all of the above in order to fit those tyres with $10,000. I'm looking at 1997+ jeep wranglers. parts are a lot cheaper and if i roll it again it's no big deal, just some broken glass and bent panels with a beefy aftermarket cage. i dunno i'm very undecided at the moment. got about a week and a half till the rental car goes and i have to pick one to buy.

32x11.5x15 will work on a 3" lifted D1. with a wheel with the proper offset (3.75-4" will work) steve at rovertym was running this setup on his D1 with his 3" springs, you may want to talk to him.

32X11.5's are just over an inch wider than the 265/75
i've ran 255/85-16 (just over 33"X 10.5) with out any issues, well except drive line vibes, inner fender rubbing, radius arm rubbing etc... all of which can be corrected, but can be spendy.

a landrover owner saying go for the jeep. i'm shocked! lol. i wanted one for about a day and realised if i have any off roader, it'll be a land rover. probably a range rover classic because there cheaper to buy. thats interesting that another 3-link rolled. conincedence i think. the suspention didn't have any say in the roll. front impact with a tree on a 75degree slope would send a stock rover rollin. i take from ur aviator u have a classic steve. had any problems? anything i should look for when i buy mine? Thanks for any help
