I honestly can't remember. but if you jack up the wheel and turn it while turning the adjuster you will evenutally not be able to turn the wheel. Assuming your shoes aren't totally worn (and aren't isntalled backwards). If it doesn't stop turning, turn the adjuster the other direction.
One caveat, there is a stop, like a little shoulder, on the adjuster, that will stop you from turing it too far. Don't force it past that.

Alternatively, just pull the hub and look at the adjuster.

I always remember turn the wrench toward the front of the vehicle tighten the brakes. To the rear of the vehicle loosen the brakes. Seems to work no matter which drum. which side.

Thanks guys. I was trying to do this on the fly to track down where my braking problems are but it seems I will have to lug my jack out and start fiddling. I have a bad back so I try to minimize the on the ground/under the truck time.

Well, the kids took a long nap today so I bled the brakes some more and jacked up each wheel to fiddle with them.

Finally got the brakes nice and tight and drove the truck up and down the street. First real drive in 6 months. However, the pedal started to soften and I noticed that fluid is coming out of the rear wheel cylinder.

Dangit. Well, that gives me an excuse to replace both the rears because the other side has a busted bleed nipple and looks to be ancient.
