My viscus unit is shot in my '90 RRC.
I have the oportunity to get a low mile LT230 out of a DII.
Does anyone have any info on this swap?
There was a thread or two on the old board about this, but.......

I have a friend that did this swap. One thing to note in doing this swap is there is no hole in the rear of the D II lt230 case for the speedometer cable. You can swap the rear of a D1 lt230 case and it will bolt directly onto the DII lt230. Also make sure you have the diff-lock stub so your not just stuck with a High/Low unlocked. You will also need a new front drive shaft the one from the BW will not work, get one from a DII or DI.

You also need an output shaft for a Discovery for the tail of the transmission. The splines are longer. 1 bolt to remove.

I did this swap , and besides the above mentioned parts you need a transmission mount from a D1 . Personaaly I would look for a D1 case so you know it is lockable and your speedo will work . I also changed the e-brake to a D1 style rather than fab mounts for the cable .

LT230 vs BW

not to change the topic too much, out of curiosity why do you want the LT230 versus the simple change out of the viscous unit?

while I agree a totally lockable center diff works better in some cases, the BW does the job and is really better on snow and rain slick roads.

if you're planning on installing lockers and running trails where you really need them, then the LT230 really is necessary in a RR.

if not, just changing out the viscous unit is pretty straight forward from looking at the manual and a less expensive way to go.

Yeah. The viscus is easy to change but it and the shaft (inner) ate each other up. And if I was going to do the viscus and shaft, I might as well do the chain and bearings and......the list goes on.
I ended up trading the used DII LT230 (with diff lock) for a rebuilt BW from Ashcroft, still in the crate with a new output shaft for the trans. The new style.
The install went smooth and I was back on the road fast. (time was an issue)
Thanks for all the information.
This is a good thread for anyone thinking of doing the swap.
