I'd drive over to Harker's Island, and catch one of the little shuttle skiffs to take you over to Lookout... it's been a decade since we've been out there, don't know what their current camping regs are....

I'm wanting to take a ferry over to the cape lookout nat sea shore and drive up to, or close to portsmouth village, spend a few days camping and fishing, may do that this spring. Really looking for some where I can drive to and not be out in the blazing sun.

I'm from just down the rode from you, originally from Unicoi, but lived in Johnson City before I moved here in May of 2005, I worked at the Garden Plaza/Double Tree and Ramada Ltd in JC.

Interesting.....

My father-in-law is from New Bern originally; when I was in infantry school, I'd spend the weekends hanging with my wife's aunt there, would loaf out in Oriental, Beaufort, etc. Also enjoyed going from Harkers up to Cedar, take the ferry over to Okracoke, and up to Buxton, would camp at Oregon Inlet. However, it's not really a "deserted place" if you know what I mean.....

I lived in Unicoi for half a year, had an apartment beside the golf course while I was at ETSU for a semester before I went to boot camp. My brother was a line cook at the restaurant in the Carnegie, then had gone to Skobys as a chef; when it closed, he shifted back to O'Charley's in JC, is now the kitchen manager.

Hmm the Blazing Sun part kind of makes that hard on the east coast since most of the camping is on the coastal islands. Outer Banks can be nice but you'll get sun. I've also been to Carolina Beach it's not much fun though unless you like fishing. Best places I've found to camp are ones you have to use a boat to get to like the smaller islands off of the coast here. But that's not really what you're looking for either.

Best place I've gone that has shade and trees has been Uwharrie Forest it's a really nice place and lot's of things to do. But it's definatly not close. But you have Baden Lake with decent fishing. You have lot's of trails, Horse, walking, OHV and other things. I've always enjoyed myself when I've gone there. Plus they have 17 Miles of trails you can take your Rover on.

Garland?! Heck, Fall of 1990, every day I'd ride out past you and turn onto Marbleton, around down into Unicoi, then back up to the Villas.... (haven't been out there in years.... last I heard, the place had become seedy, but even that was years ago, it may be cleaned up again).

Small world.....

it got bad for a while lots of migrants that work in tomatos and strawberrys, it was doing a little better not much, I remeber when it was nice and it was like the over look in Elizabethton, but thats a few years before my time, I worked with a guy at zaks that lived there his last name was Lowery, I grew up with the girl that lived in the house to the left with the pool and my cousin and another good friend lived in the house on the hill across the st from that, usually had horses.

The golf course has alot of new houses on it, especilly on the back nine, a friend of mine went into the old tennis court building and looked around before they turned it into the indoor soccer, it still had big red painted on the wall and the dance floor, my folks went there when it was a club, back in the 80's
