Cargo Door Stuck - Tried WD40 and it did not help

My 1997 Discovery recently ran into trouble with two of its doors, the Passenger side front door (opened occasionally), and the Cargo Door (doesn't open at all). I fixed the Passenger side front door with big thanks to the Tech section of DiscoWeb. I followed those instructions (and pictures) and the door now works perfectly. The Cargo door is another story. I took the cargo door interior panel off and I cannot tell what part is worn or requires replacing?? I've also tried the WD40 thing (popping of the Rover label) but that didn't help? Any idea's?

Does the latch function if you pull up hard on the lock button while operating the latch? Mine has a problem with the lock adjustment- it appears to unlock with the doors, but you have to pull up on the button while operating the latch for it to work.

My 96 did the same thing! Only after spraying LOTS of WD-40 all over in and around the inside of the mechanism did it finally open! I then emptied the can into the latch area & all around inside the lock/handle area & have been trouble free since. (Knock on "Genuine Land Rover" wood trim!) Good Luck, LRW.

Another possiblility is that the op rod from the outside handle to the latch has bent, and is jammed. If you can't put your fingers on the WRONG side of the outside handle (between the handle & the black plastic housing), then stick a screwdriver there & use it to push the handle forward (toward the paint) until it won't go any more. Then spray WD-40 (or some other lube) into the door jamb onto the strike. Then, all at the same time, push the door hard closed, use the key to hold the lock button up, and try to use the outside handle to open it.

I just had the same problem on my rear tailgate door, where I was only able to open the door with the key turned and held there. I took the latch assembly out and found that the little spring had broken that hold the door locked or unlocked. I also noticed that the child safety lock has the same type of spring on it. So, I move the good spring over to where the broken one was. I also made a replacement spring for the child lock (not as good and weaker but works) from a piece of generic spring I had laying round. I put everything back together, gave it a good lube and it all works like a champ!

Best of luck,

Jason

different idea

my 96 did the same thing -

DONT use WD-40 first.

use 409 degreaser to remove the grime that has locked it up. the aerodynamics of a disco suck dirt up into the latch area.

THEN follow with wd 40

worked like a charm for me
