centering the sterring wheel (with airbag)

hi folks,

i bought my 95 ES a couple of months back and have been enjoying it thoroughly. the only thing which is getting me down is the steering wheel is slightly off centre, about 15degrees left. it is the airbag model, so i'm i bit wary about just ripping the horn pad off and unscrewing the centre nut...

has anyone taken the airbag equipped steering wheel off a disco? if so, please let me know of any watch-out-fors?

many thanks,
Gareth

I think you can also loosen the mounting bolts for the steering linkage and center the wheel that way. Or the correct way to do it would be to fiddle with the drag link or tie rod ends. Chance's are they are rusted but you should be able to get it with some penetrating oil.

Just "re-centered" my 97 D1 steering by performing the following.
Once you've determined the "center point" of the steering wheel
1) loosen and remove the 3 bolts on the steering linkage
2) slide the linkage towards the fire wall. This should free up the end nearest the power steering box.
3) rotate steering wheel to "center point".
4) Insert bolts (3x) back into their original locations.
5) test drive.
6) If the steering wheel is not centered, perform operations 1,2 and 3.

It took me 4 times to finally center the wheel.

Good luck,
Fergy

The wheel was off center quite a bit on my 95 when I bought it. I just took it to an alignment shop and they performed a front end alignment (which it needed) and straightened out the wheel. Took about 15 minutes and cost $40 (us). It was well worth it to me, as it was quite bothersome to have the new cool LR with and off center steering wheel.

Easy

Just adjust length of steering arm from box to front wheel. Loosen sleeve bolts turn (lengthen/shorten ) link until steering wheel runs in middle.
Do not undo any thing else, esp steering wheel or box couplings..
