Can any of you Dweb'rs help me understand what is the cause of code P0183? Listed as "Fuel Temperature Sensor A Circuit High Input", vehicle is a 97 D1 with approx. 110K. I've also noticed from the black deposite on the tail pipe that its probably running rich and maybe associated with the P0183 code.

Any help guiding me thru this would be appreciated. BTW - this is the same (and only code) this vehicle has thrown.

Thanks,
Fergy

Fergy: FTS will run you about 100.00. In fact , I do believe that Sergei has one for sale. You will find the FTS on the fuel rail driver side. If I were you just change it out. The FTS will throw the CEL, and can lead to no starts (or what is also called as a hot no start). I looked for a picture I dont have one...Melissa 1998 D1

PS You can check it with a OHMS reader..Search thru the forum under FTS there is a chart to follow accordingly.

Melissa (aka "Roverchic"),

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my "send help" message. I'll take your advise and search thru the forum under FTS. If it is the FTS that is the culprit, will it also cause the vehicle to run rich (i.e. black exhaust)?

Thanks,
Fergy

Found it. Yes it can cause it to run rich. So can bad 02 sensors, and bad cats.

Thanks Melissa, I'll check it out this weekend. Recently replaced the cats with NRP Y-pipe so hopefully its not them. The O2 sensors are still the originals and have approx 112K on them, these could be at risk. Can the O2's be checked?
I'll do a search thru the archieve to see if any postings on O2 sensors are available.

Thanks again,
fergy

Yes Fergy you can check your 02 sensors. I would start with the upstream first as they usually go before the ones downstream. You can purchase them from Nathan Crabtree. He has the best deals on them, that I have been able to locate. I will have to find the chart on testing the 02 sensors. They really are a pain to get out especially the passenger side sensor. You might want to jack the Rover up or maybe utilize a ladder. Melissa N

Melissa,
Thanks again on your insight and perseverance. I'm getting pretty efficient at the removal and re-install operation of the y-pipe. In fact I was planning on dropping the y-pipe so I can re-install the frame cross member. I neglected to re-install the cross member after performing a ****** filter "refresh". Installed the y-pipe then proceeded to roll over and smack my head on ...you guessed it... the cross bar (duh).
I'll check the O2's once the y-pipe is removed.

If you come across the O2 chart please forward it onto me if you could.
Thanks Fergy

Fergy: The Y-Pipe Gig scares me. I have yet to drop mine but I am toying with the idea this weekend.
this is the same code
When you say that does it mean that you clear the code and then so many engine revolutions it comes back (CEL)? If so, it is no longer a PD code (pending code) it is more or less a hard code. Maybe try cleaning the MAFS too. Just to get everything good and clean.

Melissa,
In total, I've probably "cleared" the code 3 times within the last 10 months. It can be as few as 350 miles and as many as 1K miles before "I see the light...so to speak".

As far as performing a ****** "refresh" its fairly straight forward. Remove the exhaust nuts (manifold/y-pipe connection and y-pipe/muffler), remove O2's, drop exhaust, remove frame cross bar. Trickiest part was the removal of the frame cross bar, just take your time and work it down and out. Install in reverse order.......don't forget to install the frame cross bar BEFORE you install the exhaust (another rover lesson learned).

You might want to recruit some help with the removal and subsequent re-install of the exhaust system. I did it solo but it entailed elbows, knees and a few head-butts.
I found that Rammstein Mutter and a few beers worked the patience angle.

Good luck,
fergy
