Yeah. I don't know what PA you're talking about, but we have pretty strict emissions requirements in the PA I'm living in...
Alyssa....I live in Columbia Co. not down there in Bux-Mont area, I moved from there and am glad i am not paying $65-$90 extra for the emission test any more, my bill for INSPECTION is $20 including sticker gotta love that. You have to remember those emission test are still confined to counties within a certain mile radius from PHILLY, PIT, & HARRISBURG.
The fact is I DO NOT WANT to GUT MY CATS just replace one for two, and drop the resonator.
WOW I had no idea it was gonna cause this much legal mumbo jumbo. It is good to know that there are laws in place which will give me second thoughts but the chance of getting caught for it sounds like 1 out of 10KKKKKK.
I am glad that there are people out there who still care about the environment unlike "W", 'nough said.
(d) Visual inspection of emission control system. Vehicles registered in counties where there is not an emission inspection program under Chapter 177 (relating to emission inspection program), shall be checked visually for the presence of emission control components. These components may be original vehicle equipment or an equivalent aftermarket replacement component meeting the same standards. In addition to the exceptions under ? 175.4 (relating to vehicles required to be inspected), this subsection does not apply to vehicles registered as collectible or classic motor vehicles as defined in 75 Pa.C.S. ? 102 (relating to definitions).
This is what I would be under seeing that i do not live in a county with emission tests ;)

someone else brought up the cat gutting... don't sweat it. by the time they get the enforcement of these new rules (and existing ones) in place, your Disco will qualify for antique status. :D

When they start enforcing the antique vehicle emissions standards, I plan to cash in on the stacks of MG air pumps I have stashed in my garage... hehehe...

even if you dont have emission testing you will have to have the safety inspection. part of that inspection is making sure you have the cats under the truck.

If you take it to a shop who knows what its supposed to look like under there you will likely flunk. i guess you could keep taking it to differnt shops until no one notices, but it's not legal if thats what you were wondering. i'll put it this way, don't take it to the dealer for inspection.

you know, down here in the great state of Florida, we have No inspection process whatsoever! No Cats? Who cares!? 2x4 for a bumper? Who Cares!? No headlights/taillights/turnsignals? Who Cares!? Whats worse...our law enforcement only springs into action if it will land them on COPS, so consequently, nobody ever gets stopped, hardly! Off the soap-box now...

...because of the lack of inspections, I drive this...

I wouldnt worry about the stuff coming out of a non-cat exhuast it may be a problem if you are taking hits from the exhuast but other than that I really dont see a health problem. I say go for it get rid of the cats and get some headers. I knew some people that werent running cats on other vehicles, and in NC I have never had my exhuast or emissions equipment checked tested. my .02$

I am probably wrong about this, so anyone that knows feel free to correct me. I was under the impression that cats are only used to heat up and scrub emissions during engine warm up. I thought that once the engine was at proper operating temperature that cats basically didn't do anything. If this is true then if you yanked your cats it would only increase emissions during warm up right?. This would be a bad thing for someone who drives their cars 15 miles then lets it cool for 1/2 hour and repeats, but its less of a problem for someone who jumps in and drives 500 miles at a stretch.

Is this accurate?

I 'think' that the cats work all the time. They don't scrub emissions. they take the CO and turn into CO2 via the platinum catalyst (which is why it works better at high temps). Again, I am stretching a bit to remember to remember the details, but the gist is, the cats are always working.

Aren't emissions tests a county thing? Under the "supervision" of the state?

My parents live in Albemarle County, VA. Because of lots of farm-use vehicles and the rural nature of the communities, any vehicle registered there is emissions exempt as far as I can tell.

Susannah, is this correct?

might be true but this guy is in PA and its illegal to do what he wants to do.
From what you stated before if I do not have emission inspection in my county, that as long as i have a cat there it is ok......

You are only looking at the state codes- EPA is fed and more restrictive.

as long as you don't remove the cat, and just gut it , it will pass a visual inspection. in nc, however, i've never even heard of anybody getting a visual inspection. they usually just check the lights and are done with it.

Australian D1s don't have cats or O2 sensors, perhaps you could change the tune resistor if your car runs 14cux injection to the Australian value and ditch both. I don't know any one who has ever seen the check engine light come on an Ozzy Disco D1

We don't have cats or O2 sensors on our vehicles either including D1's. My D1 was imported from the UK with no cats or O2 sensors.
