Hi Folks,
I noticed something hanging down from my muffler yesterday - the one the tailpipe exits from. It looks sort of like a fiberglass wrap or something that's deteriorated and is coming off. Is this a heat shield ? I saw one on a parts site but I couldn't determine where it went. Seems like most of the heat would be gone by the time the exhaust got back that far. Anybody else seen this, or know if it is a heat shield ?
Thanks,
DiscoJag

There is a heat shield above the rear resinator, could that be what you're seeing?

if there are any holes in your muffler then i belive what you are seeing is the sound damping packing that is inside the muffler, its what muffles.... or is it coming out the tailpipe , but it still could be the same thing

dont just laugh this off. the drain line from the rear AC drips right onto the rear resonator rusts a hole in it and directs all the exhaust heat sideways onto the rear step pivot bolt. that bolt gets so hot it melts a hole in the plastic fuel tank and causes a leak in the tank. :( not so good

this happened to my truck and a tech from the local rover dealer told me he has seen it happen a number of times

Thanks for the replies guys. It must be the heat shield for the rear resonator because it's not made of metal and the muffler/resonator isn't leaking. I guess I should break down and see if there's anything in the docs on the CD I have (which shall remain nameless). It sounds like the thing is not just there for cosmetics.
