Helped a buddy do the brake pads front and rear on a D2. Pads were really worn and we also did front rotors.

After doing this, the brake fluid was right at the max line. After pumping the brakes a bit, did a test drive and it seems like the first time you press the pedal it travels a long ways, then the second time, it firms up. Dive and bit againafter pumping them a bit. Same thing first press and the pedal travels a long ways (seems too far), second time it firms up.

Any ideas?

Do a complete brake fluid flush, I switched to synthetic brake fluid that helped a little also.

This is common on Disco 2's and has nothing to do with the pad change (unless you opened the nipples). It might need to be bled, or it might be normal for the vehicle. Perhaps he is noticing it more now because the brakes aren't bedded in yet, and thus he needs more pedal pressure to stop well.

just did mine on saturday on my DII and they got hugely squishy without opening the bleeders.

I did a partial flush and bled from the right rear, leftrear, front right front left and the pedal firmed right up and is perfect.

where the air comes from god only knows but I have been hearing about this with DII for years here and saw it first hand saturday on my new to me DII .
