Reason why i asked - you see, "call" signal that you hear when you already speaking on the phone actually causing modem to disconnect. To avoid it there was some symbolic command that you may add to regular modem calling string, but i havent used it for like 5-6 years so i cant recall what it looks like.

Also sometime its not provider that throws you out, but colleciton of singals that sent out to attack one's computer. Ye old school dudes can literally fry targeted modems, if they feel like it. Fortunately most of those old school dudes are now hiired as security experts :)

And it also can be crappy phone line (aka rotten wiring, laid down 20 years ago) - so signal's level dropping and modem looses it.

Mike, for a million reasons AOL sucks. It's very proprietary, it junks up your system without your permission, the service itself is crap, and like the Hotel California, it's hard to leave when you decide it's time. Add that to the fact that if AOL is all someone knows they are a virtual computer illiterate, and you have a bouquet of bullshit. Yes, I had it for years, no it was not my first or only service, yes I was thrilled to dump it. I call it F-AOL and still resent the fact that my browser still says, "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by America Online" and I can't change that apparently without reformatting my hard drive. Do yourself a favor and dump it and move on.

KJ, "Ask me what I really think about FAOL!" :p

AOL is great for people like my mom... I use it because I've had the same email address for 12 years and haven't paid for it since then either by using Visa points to cover the bill.
On the up-side, if you travel internationally- AOL is easy to get dial-up in obscure places overseas.

AOL is for your grandma who has only seen a computer on TV that could fill her living room. If you have used a computer before your far too advanced to use it. Its crap, its a joke and takes advantage of people who are new to a computer.

Dump it, pony up and get cable, you'll never go back to anything less.

Do you have call waiting on that line? If so, prepend *70,, . The *70 disables call waiting, and the comma's mean 'pause'. I used to have the entire AT command set and registers memorized, but I'm rusty since the end of the dialup BBS's... but I think comma's represent either 1/2 sec or 1 sec by default.

AMEN! I had AOL for a while (dial-up) - about stabbed my eyeballs out in frustration - absolutely HATED it. Sucked sucked sucked!

Switched to DSL - that was awesome, but for some reason became, shall we say, not as reliable as it should be. Not bad, but not great.

Moved to Cable - freeekin' darn near perfect. If it stops working for some weird reason, I call Cox and they "fix it" in 2 minutes - but I maybe call them once every 3-4 months. Won't go to anything else.

Download Spybot 1.3 from download.com, update it to the latest files. Then turn on the advanced settings. Go to the "tools" tab, then "I.E. Tweaks", at this point change the Custom title to anything you want...

I would tell you how to do this in the Registry, but this is a lot easier and safer for the average user.

Hope it helps.

Joey, thanks for this tip. I'll try just that today. Believe me, that would feel like a triumph over that vestige of FAOL ;)

Joey, I did exactly as you instructed and it worked like a charm! THANKS! That reminder of FAOL had bugged me since the day that godforsaken "service" changed the header without my permission. One less little PIA for me to notice in my day :)
