First off... The maint manual for my disco I says for auto transmission that I should use either Dexron III or Dexron IID, so I shall use Dexron III. However the powersteering seems to call for only Dexron IID, is there any reason for this? Can I just use more Dexron III?

Next, does anyone have the K&N part number for the long oil filter for the disco I? I can find the short one on the website, but I want the long one.

Any brand preferences for coolant?

If it doesn't really matter to you why don't you use Dextron IID for both Transmission and Power Steering so you don't have to swap. I prefer to use Power Steering Fluid on my power steering regard regarless what the book says, just my onw preferance!!! As for the K&N part number are you looking for the Cone shape filters? If so you can visit their website and search through their vendors for the particular filter your looking for.
As for coolant Prestone is what I use!!!!!

I use dextron III in my trans and power steering fluid instead of dextron IId

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the brake system on a d1 call for DOT4 fluid? Either I saw it somewhere or someone told me, don't remember. All I can seem to find is DOT3

DOT4 is more water resistant than DOT3, so it would make sense that it would be recomended for a Land Rover. Not saying you should use it, or that it is recomended by anybody, just that it's a more water resistant product.

And I believe the DOT4 is recommended for high temperature operating components.

The K&N Filter I'm looking for is the long oil filter. K&N has no application but I know it exists (AB sells it but I want to buy locally). Does anyone know the difference between Dexron IID and III?

:)

the KN filter should be the same that fits 95 Ford F150's (and other Ford truck models) I believe. I know the fram # is PH8A. might be able to cross-conference.

oil filters, what length?

Robbie, the Fram by many people is a no no because of oil drain back. PH 8A or Per 1 are your 4 3/4" long filters. Fram PH2815 is 5 7/8" long, Fram PH977A is 6 7/8" long. Also Hastings 426 is 6 7/8" long and has cotton as a media. There is room on the D1, (D2?) to run a 6 7/8" long filter on top of a one inch sandwich adapter, you will miss the crossmember by 3/8". Beware if your a rock smasher as the long filter will hang below the crossmember by app 2". I installed a pre-oiler so drain back isn't a problem, a large filter with the smallest micron filteration means long engine life. Carl.........o&o>.................
