Electrical Problem. Help

Hi all,

The instruments and rear lights stopped working, checked all the fuses, they are fine.

Anyone have the Electrial Trouble Shooting Manual? I hate going to the dealers.

Symptoms:

-Check engine light on and off for a year. 99% is O2 again. Now is "ON"

-ABS light "ON" 4 months ago. Dealer reset it and replace a relay 2 months later. It is "OFF" now.

-Hazards will NOT flash when unlocking with both remotes and key, DO flash when locking. (6 months ago?? or after the dealer visit)

-Instruments and rear lights stopped working 2 weeks ago (reversing lights work) . No warming sound as well. (door opens, engine off) Forgot to switch off, need jump start the next day.

-Driving with headlight and rear fog lights for 2 weeks.

-Instruments and rear lights WORK on the returning trip last night. NOT working again tonight.

I am guessing (hoping??) a poor contact on fuse/relay/switch.

Please Help.

I dont know about your other problems but your tail light/instrument panel problem is connected because they are on the same circuit. Possible bad ground connection. Sorry I dont have the manual for it, but I would start by checking the rear lights for burned or loose grounds. Also, check your fuses with a test light, sometimes they can pop in weird places that you cant see.

open the glove box and see if the light in there has come loose
i have seen the bulb holder come loose and the contacts short out to the the metal dash causing the instument lights to go out

good luck greg

The Answer

hey man - had the same problem come up on my 96 this past weekend. i finally got a chance to look into it last night. the problem is a 20AMP fuse under the hood, in the fuse box next to the coolant res. the fuse is labeled "sidelights". check it out, it should be blown or have a bad connection - change the fuse, and you will have dash lights, park lights, and the warning chime again.

Glove box light

The glove box light the rear pass' sidelights instrument light and the beep beep are all on the same circuit.
Pull the fuse I think Number 8 under steering wheel. Check and remove the glove light and hang wires away from metal contact, put in a new fuse.
Start there, this very same thing happen to me some two weeks ago. I gave up looking for the problem and go my LR Mechanic to look at it. At a heavy cost.
I wish you lot had chimed in 2 weeks ago it would have save me big bucks
