The top of my engine (where 4.0 is) is dirty and sort of stained looking. Is there anything out there that I can use to clean it? Any help would be appreciated.

castrol make a nice degreaser, spray on and low pressure hose off, some of the gunk might not come off unless you do a little scrubbing, also have used simple green and brake parts cleaner, but the most important thing is low water pressure. once you have it clean and DRY put dialectric grease in all electrical connectors and spray a protectant on any bare metal, I have found BO SHEILD from boeing aircraft a nice overall bare metal protectant also some elbow grease will be needed too.... -Andy

After using what ever cleaner you pick then power wash the engine and it will be like new. I have power washed my engine after every really dirty run for the last 2 years with no problems.

A lot of shops have steam cleaners, and that works VERY well. Most only charge a ten spot or so to do it for you if they're nice. Some will even lift the car and get underneath for you too. I had it done, and the engine looks brand spankin new.

Thanks but I have more of a stained up head (where it says 4.0) and wanted to just clean that up a bit. Is there anything I should or shouldn't use?

I can think of anything you shouldn't use.... wait.... a drum sander with 40 grit... dont use that...... :D but you can use scotch brite and follow the "grain' of the casting, and then coat lightly to protect it... you should be all set
