Is there anyway to get an engine code on a 96 disco without hooking it up to a computer? If not how much should I plan on spending for the diagnosis from a repair facility?

If you plan on doing a lot of work on your rig yourself over the lifespan of your truck, buying an OBDII reader is a good investment. They're usually around $200, although you can probably sniff out a deal somewhere.

If not, AutoZone will read your codes for free. Just make sure to write down the number itself---they'll offer you a diagnosis, but my experience has been they match the codes for a Ford or Dodge, not a Rover.

Yeah, it's under the steering column for a DI.. can't miss it.

Obdii

I got an OBDII "interface" for under $100. It's a small box between two cables. One end plugs into the OBDII post under steering wheel of '96 and up Disco and the other plugs into serial port on laptop or desktop. The software is free from the guy's website who makes up the interfaces. It'll read codes, reset them, and give you charts and graphs of diagnostic info, and also give you the code definitions and likely diagnosis. Of course none of these things will give you a definitive answer, but you can find them relatively cheap now.

discojag, where did you get your obdii interface. Do you know if it will work on my 1998 discovery. Sounds like a good deal for a great tool.

Firelandy, I got it from OBDDiagnostics.com. I have no affiliation, etc., etc. But the thing works for me and should work with any OBDII vehicle.
