Side of the road....
I have a 2000 disco II w/ just over 25K miles on it. I have noticed that it is tapping and I was wondering if this is a normal thing. My wife says it cant be heard over the radio but can be heard when it is shut off. I have an Acura as well and honda/acura engines are notorius for there "tap". I was wondering if this is the case with the 4.0 V8 that 'rover uses.

Ah! You live in Hawaii! Can I guess the traffic capital of Oahu? I still love Oahu, but the truth of the matter is that these Rover motors need to be spun up a little. The top-end lubrication is very poor until you get to the 3500+ range. 4000 rpm is even better. Oahu (and most of the rest of the islands) are not good for revving many motors up under load. I know when I am there, if I am driving, I am in traffic. Try driving it like you stole it for a little while. If that does not work then a valve job may be in your future...

I would also check the exhaust manifolds to ensure they are not cracked.

Easiest way to check for all engine noises is with a mechanics stethescope.... or a long screwdriver.
