PM me for a phone # and give me a call. You are more than welcome to test drive some of my stuff.

Black guns are over thought and people put to much shit on them. Get some parts come over for an afternoon and we'll put one together. OK it will only take about an hour then we can smoke cigars the rest of the time.

See, I've heard that barrels longer than 19" are pointless, and can actually reduce accuracy because of barrel flex.

Yes and no. Most modern powder completes its burn in the first 12" of the barrel. The harmonics of longer barrels can be a problem but is usually handled by the thickness and profile of the barrel. The key is that the harmonics are always the same every shot.

Yes longer barrels typically produce higher bullet speeds but long barrels suck to carry all day. The last time I re-barreled my old teams rifles we went down from 24' to 20". Made the weapon much easier to handle and accuracy was better (mostly because the barrel quality was higher). Nobody on this board including me can list the weapon as the limiting factor of accuracy. ;)

I may take you up on that offer. I'm moving to south Houston at the end of Feb, so after getting squared away (new ID, unpacked, construct work/reloading bench, etc), I'll be getting something early Apr.

Andrew, any good ranges in the East Texas area? I have only shot at the ranch and back in Dallas, haven't tried any places out east. I'm in Nacogdoches.

There is one decent indoor range which I've seen and its pretty nice for what it is. There is, from what I'm told, a nice outdoor when close by but I haven't had time to shoot at it yet. I'll be paying it a visit soon I hope so I'll let you know.

My $ 0.02 assuming your EBR is a .223 cal

At 300 - 600 yards there is absolutely no noticeable difference between a 16" & 18" barrel for the casual shooter, its accuracy or zeroing properties.

At 600-800 too hard to tell ( I put my money on the shooters breathing technique over the barrel length )

If shooting from irons, your zeroing procedure starts @ 25 yards so not much impact.

If using an acog, your zeroing start @ 200 yards and the acog most likely will include BDC, so again not much impact

If you shoot over 800 and often, make sure your EBR is a .308

Not that I know anything about this crap... I hust read about it

Just to clarify, do you put your Acog target 200m away from you when you are zeroing it? With the zero targets provided for each type of the RCO, I have never had an issue zeroing them from a 25. Just as long as the zero target is applicable to the specific sight you are using, i.e. chevron, dot, etc. placement/hit area. It is the same thing as iron sight zero except your target is different. Then you can always double check it by shooting at 100, 200, etc. Zero the irons, then RCO, done deal.

there are two good outdoor ranges and one good indoor range once you get there.
the two best outdoor ranges are bayou rifles and pearland shooting club, the arms room has a nice indoor range.
both bayou rifles and pearland shooting club are private ranges and run about $140 a year. i'm a member at bayou rifles & if you want to check it out i'll take you as my guest

You are right most ACOG can be zero the same way as irons, with a provided or purchased target.

Most of my ACOGs are Trijicons and come pretty much zeroed from factory specially the ones with a carry handle mount; however, doing the 200 yards zeroing allows the switch from Suppressed ( and correspondent ammo ) to non suppressed flawless without loosing your groups.

Update:

About a month ago I finally was able to pull the trigger on a gun (getting TX ID, etc.). I ended up getting a LWRC M6A3 for a good price. No optics yet, just the OEM factory flip up iron sights (had to buy a new fridge, so my budget came down). I figure I'll get acquainted with the iron, and get the IOR 3x25 Tactical at a later point.

I really like this weapon. Fit/finish is great, and the way they coat the bolt/barrel is outstanding. A bit pricey, but I figure I'll have this rifle for a lifetime. Can't wait to hit the range. (DirtyJim - you've got PM)

BTW - anyone in SW Houston, there is a new gun store in Rosenberg that just opened. It's called Top Gun Firearms. It was run out of the owners carpet and tile shop next door, but is pretty good sized store. Check it out. http://topgunfirearmsandtacticalsupply.com/

For me, this will be 5.56/.223, and limited to <300 yds.

Beyond that - I break out the .308:bigok:

Why are you limiting it to under 300yds for the 5.56?

Personal preference? 5.56 will get out there no problem.

We shoot 500yds iron sights all the time. Although now they use the ACOG/RCO's at the ranges, but we used to use open iron sights for the 500yd line.

You're right - no real reason to limit less than 300; I know the 5.56 will go out to 600 easily. But for just shooting paper/targets, I'd rather play with my .308 bolt at those ranges. Just preference.
