Expedition rack with surfboard carrier?

I am looking for an expedition rack or safari type rack with one side made to haul something long and flat like a surfboard. I am not interested in the half racks (over the back half of the roof) but I am looking for a rack with say just one side of the roof as a basket and the other side a rack for my boards. I saw a similar rack (looked custom made) on a van recently and on one side was carrying a ladder and the other side had the basket.

Anyone seen these for sale or am I going to have to find someone to fab one for me?

I don't know of any one rack. But I'll tell you what I used to do. I used a Yakima standard roof rack, got longer cross bars and then mounted a Yakima basket on one side and my snow board rack on the other. This way I was able to carry my boards and gear all up on the roof. Hope this helps.

depending on how far you drive with you board(s) just through them on the roof. get a solid board bag or coffin. your board will be protected, you can put it on either side of your rack or you could lay on top of your stuff.

or you can use the yakima set up. quite a few people have those things around here.

with a board bag you should be able to just put it on the rack wherever. un less you wanted your board to be held on by a proper surf rack..you know little foam pads with your surf shop logo on it.

you hawaiian?

a hui ho!!!!

nice pic of wing nut on the nose..classic shot.

you guys have some fun breaks up there? you tow or paddle into these bombs weve been hearing about so much down here in half moon bay?

I have been thinking about the coffin idea. I would like to have somewhere to put my wetsuit besides in a big Rubbermaid tote that takes up valuable, non-existent cargo space. I have a Thule surfboard attachment now on my stock LR cross bars and it works great but I like the look and idea of having a basket of some type on the roof. Then again it wouldn't keep any of my stuff secure like a coffin would.

A friend of mine has a Honda Element with a coffin and stores 3 boards in it. But he is 5'7" so not longboarder by choice (those little guns fit nicely in it). I am 6'4" and need a coffin that would hold at least a 9'6" board. Can't even stay up on anything smaller than 7'0" so my delemia. Maybe a coffin for my stuff and just my current Thule rack would work fo the boards. Too many choices...

Oh and I'm not Hawaiian but do know some so the signature... Many of my friends are from there. There are some great breaks up here. Probably more surf than Cal but not as consistent. There is one beach break here that is about 10 miles long and consistent little rippers all the way down it. I don't do the tow in stuff but know guys who are into it. It's wild! The Outer Banks is the place to go... THAT is a lot of wave...

Mahalo bruddah for the ideas... he`e nalu!
