Extended Warranty Questions (yes Again)

I am debating whether to keep my current Disco for a while ('02 30k). If I keep it, I will for sure get an extended warranty. I remeber someone saying that I should get Ford's Easy Care instead of Land Rovers. I have had Easy Care on past Fords and I swear by them (they replaced three tires I destroyed while wheeling!!) I was just hoping for any advice on when I should buy and who I should talk to. Thanks in advance.

IMHO, get neither and go independent. Shop around and ask for detailed information about what they cover before you purchase.

LR extended warranties are backed by the dealership (not the factory) who sells the warranty, so it's up to them whether or not to sell you one, how much to charge you, and what stipulations they put on it. If it's the same place you'll ALWAYS be getting service done, then it might be worth it.

Aftermarket x-warranties specify HOW MUCH they'll pay on each particular repair job, what parts they do & don't pay for, and what will void the warranty. So if your dealership charges more than the warranty company is willing to pay, YOU will probably have to pay the difference. It also takes longer to get your car fixed because they send an adjustor out to inspect the car & review the proposed repairs & costs.

I don't know about Ford's x-warranty.

What Steve stated is exactly why I want one backed by LR (ford). I have had awesome luck with Easy Care and horrible luck with EVERYONE else. I have been stuck w/ over $1000 in charges for two repairs because my stealer charges so much more than the warranty company would cover. There is no good independent by me. I would love to use an independent shop, but I have not found one that I really trust. I am willing to pay more and have a hassle free experience. I was just wondering how I can go about getting an Easy Care warranty and if there is a benefit of it compared to a LR warrany or visa-versa.

Not always true. I had a no-deductable aftermarket warranty. It was managed by mepco and financed by API. They cared not who did the fixes as long as they were LR certified. You may not be able to get this coverage on a LR anymore.

LR warrantied suffer from the same stipulations. For example they will not cover maintenance items and they may not cover items due to modifications and or off-road use. Even the standard warranties suffer from this.

This warranty was $2500 at 49k miles for 50k/5yr warranty. It paid out about 12k of repairs.

Shop around.

If you can get in contact with Melissa Brown (I think that's her last name) who works for a dealer I think in the Philly area, she was the clear expert on this subject before the server change. I don't find her as Melissa on the current members list, but if you uncover her email from the archives or ? she could give expert advice. Ray

This all has a hell of a lot to do with how you deal with people, and what sort of people your dealership employs. I have never had any problems with warrenties, despite modifications. If you walk in to your dealership the first time to buy your car, and you bother the hell out of the salesperson, then, on the first schedualed maintanance visit, you are content when no one recognises you or asks you how things are going lately, you will have problems. I went to a dealer on the opposite coast once, two years ago, and they still remember me. People want to help those they consider friends.

On the other hand, there have been places containing people I couldn't help but insult. I once demanded from a manager that his incompetent mechanic give my keys back before I placed them in an area where he might find an intimate relationship with them. It's a two way street, but most of the time, if you can see past the nametag, theres an interesting person back there.

Cheers,

Kennith

Sure if you are a butt head, what comes around goes around. However, I if there is any possibility that a warratnty repair is directly related to a modification or something you did offroad, then it will not be repaired and if so the dealer or person repairing the damage can be sued for fraud. Likely they will not take this risk.

It has to do with the problems you have that need fixing and whether they are effected by modifications. For example I would guess that NO warranty would cover an axle if you have lockers.

If a single repair is over a certain dollar amount usually the warranty company will send out an inspector as well.

Curtis, I think you're very correct. My old brain doesn't function too well anymore. Thanks for the clarification. Anyway, she seemed to be very knowledgeable about extended warranties and many other issues. Ray

Ray you make me laugh..You got me (Melissa N) confused with Alyssa. Easy to do ..Although Melissa Brown sure has a nice ring to it (JK Alyssa) ..two lawyers in one house (under one roof) is not a pretty combo ..Its Alyssa Brown she is a Gold Certified Land Rover Sales Consultant in PA.

Sorry, Melissa, but us old guys get confused easily. But you're still welcome to visit WARM (actually HOT) California, or come riding on a nice ranch in Montana and get reacquainted with one-horsepower modes of transportation. Ray

Stay away from Penn Warrenty

I got Penn as part of a Buy It Now Deal when I got my truck. Later when I found coolent in my oil they refused to cover it. The gaskets were good and the heads tested OK but I had a hard time demonstrating a crack on a cold engine block. Since I couldn't show them the crack they said there was no failure.
