Father’s Day woes part two

This morning, I thought I had the rear brake issue fixed. Took the truck for a test ride around the block in our local neighborhood. Brakes felt solid. Coolant temps after the flush looked good. Truck running well after the PM work.

A dad taking his son for a driving lesson in a Tesla truck ran a stop sign and clipped me in the rear passenger quarter panel.

I pulled the car over to the side and stopped and we exchanged information. When I tried to get back in, the door wouldn’t open from the outside, the SRS light was on, and the truck wouldn’t start.

Got out, walked around the truck popped the hood. Everything looked ok. Got back in. Truck started, but the gauges aren’t working. I had my OBD tester in as I was monitoring coolant. Battery showed only 11.8v. I drove home and the brakes felt weak again. When I put a tester on that battery, it showed 12.6.

The SRS light “no start” situation is intermittent, but when I do get it started, the gauges don’t work. No temp, no temp readings, no RPM, no speedometer. Scanner shows no faults.IMG_4330.jpeg

Look around the tail light is and see if you have any wiring issues from the accident.
Weird things happen when grounds are messed up.

No wiring issue that I can see with the harness. The outter and inner panels are crunched, but away from the harness and ground to the frame underneath. If I get in and turn the key and the SRS lights is on, the truck won't start. I wait a minute or two and try again and it will fire up but the dash shows nothing and no tach or speedo. Lights work. AC works. Seats work. Clock works. Just the dash causing issues when it does start. The intermittent nature of the SRS issue and the door not opening from the outside when the SRS is a head scratcher.

Insurance checks are cut and on the way to me. As expected, not a lot of money, but it will cover the repair parts and put a few bucks in my pocket for loss of use, etc..

Alternator is testing bad. Battery at 12.4v engine off. Drops to 11.81 engine is running. Multimeter at the battery and alternator showed 11.8. At the alternator hot terminal to the alternator body, still only 11.8v.

The grounds seem to check out OK. Highest I hit so far is 5.5mV on the grounds. New alternator on the way.

Also picked up a new bumper and cap and tail light assembly from Will.

Just gonna pound out and rivet the torn quarter panel and slap some sealant on it. No point in putting a dress on this pig.
